Tom Hart will replace Gianpiero Lambiase as Max Verstappen’s race engineer at Red Bull in 2027, and he will also now step up in Texas, Brazil and Las Vegas to end 2026.
The historic partnership between Verstappen and Lambiase is due to reach its end after the 2026 F1 season, after the latter agreed to join McLaren as their new chief racing officer. Red Bull initially sought to keep Lambiase through 2027, but they have now eased their position.
Lambiase has been a vital member of the Red Bull team since 2015, when he initially moved to Milton Keynes to work with Daniil Kvyat. The Italian-British engineer later started working with Verstappen after the Dutchman’s move to Red Bull in 2016, and they went on to create one of the most successful driver-engineer relationships with four F1 titles and 73 race wins.
Tom Hart will be Max Verstappen’s race engineer from 2027 and for three of the final races in 2026
As well as supporting Kvyat and then Verstappen, Lambiase also took up the role of head of racing at Red Bull in 2025. Tom McCullough will take over as Red Bull’s latest head of racing position once Lambiase moves to McLaren, which may now be as early as the start of 2027.
Red Bull have also announced that Hart will replace Lambiase (affectionately known as GP) as Verstappen’s race engineer from 2027, having tempted the engineer to stay after initially agreeing to go to Williams. Hart had signed a deal to work with Alex Albon at Williams from 2027, but a chance to support Verstappen persuaded the Briton to instead stay at Red Bull.
Hart will also now stand in for Lambiase as Verstappen’s race engineer in three of the final six rounds of the 2026 F1 season to help smooth the transition on the Red Bull pit wall. He will step in for the United States Grand Prix in Texas, the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in Brazil and the Las Vegas Grand Prix, with Lambiase resuming his role in Mexico, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
So, with that in mind, F1 Oversteer takes a look at everything that you need to know about Verstappen’s new Red Bull race engineer Hart, including his career as a Formula 1 engineer.
Tom Hart is a British engineer currently working as a performance engineer for Red Bull on Max Verstappen’s side of their garage. Hart joined Verstappen’s engineering team in 2020, and has played a key role alongside Gianpiero Lambiase picking set-ups and analysing data.
It is not currently in the public domain how old Hart is, nor where the British engineer was born. But it is known that Hart graduated from the University of Warwick in 2012 with a BE (Hons) degree in mechanical engineering before then joining Red Bull Racing later in 2012.
Prior to starting his Formula 1 career on an industrial student placement at Red Bull in 2012, Hart also briefly acted as a political researcher to Chris White MP in the House of Commons. Red Bull also offered Hart his first full-time position in Formula 1 in 2013 after his placement.
Hart was also an exceptionally bright student through his years in school and college, having gained an A in his French GCSE despite taking it two years early and also gained an A-level in French despite again taking it two years early.
Red Bull first hired Tom Hart on an industrial student placement with their race engineering department in July 2012, before handing him a full-time position within that department at the end of his placement in August 2013. Hart’s efforts in Milton Keynes also convinced Red Bull to promote him to a simulator performance engineer role as quickly as November 2014.
Hart spent five years working as a simulator performance engineer before Red Bull then put a role with their race team on the table for January 2020. Red Bull made Hart a performance engineer on Max Verstappen’s side of their garage, which ultimately led the Dutch driver to choose the British engineer to replace Gianpiero Lambiase as his race engineer from 2027.
Working as a simulator performance engineer saw Hart play a crucial role in Red Bull’s work correlating their on-track and simulator data, along with refining set-ups (both ahead of the races and during race weekends). The simulator role also saw Hart work with Red Bull’s full-time F1 race drivers between 2014 and 2019 plus their simulator and development drivers.
From 2027, Hart’s CV will also include the title of race engineer to Verstappen. Hart is only the third full-time race engineer that Verstappen has worked with in Formula 1, along with Xevi Pujolar at Toro Rosso (2015-16) and Lambiase at Red Bull (2016-present). Verstappen has occasionally worked with Simon Rennie for Red Bull when Lambiase was unavailable.
Throughout Tom Hart’s career in Formula 1, which he has to date spent exclusively with Red Bull, he has helped the Milton Keynes natives and Max Verstappen to win a number of titles.
