Former Premier League referee Mike Dean believes John Brooks made the wrong decision not to send off Jayden Bogle during Leeds United's 1-0 win against Tottenham.

The incident occurred in the 37th minute at Elland Road when Bogle rushed in to challenge Mathys Tel. But as the Spurs forward dribbled beyond his marker, Bogle inadvertently stepped on Tel's right ankle as he looked to make a tackle with his other foot.

Brooks blew up for a foul and didn't show a card of any colour, but was told to wait by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), who watched the challenge multiple times before advising the on-field referee to stick with his original decision.

It meant that Bogle went unscathed and played up until the 93rd minute, while Tel was forced to be substituted, with Dominic Solanke coming on in his absence.

Although Brooks didn't send Bogle off, ex-Premier League referee Dean believes that the Leeds right-back was fortunate not to receive a red card for the incident.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, Dean said: "It is 100 per cent a red, he has caught him right down the back of the Achilles. It is not a good tackle at all. I would be astounded if John Brooks is not sent to the screen."

Meanwhile, former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann agreed with Dean's take and feels that Bogle should have been given a straight red card.

Cann told BBC Sport: "Jayden Bogle was, in my opinion, very fortunate to escape a red card for a challenge on Mathys Tel. Bogle stood on the back of Tel’s Achilles and the challenge was similar to Ryan Sessegnon’s red card challenge for Fulham against Hull a few weeks ago.

"Bogle’s challenge meets the criteria for serious foul play as he endangers the safety of an opponent, and he can consider himself lucky to still be on the pitch.

"Tel needed lengthy treatment which enabled the VAR to closely consider a red card but ultimately it was decided the challenge didn’t meet the threshold for a sending off."

Bogle helped Leeds secure a much-needed win against Tottenham to ease the pressure on Daniel Farke, with Noah Okafor's second-half strike proving decisive.

It's a result that moves Leeds up to eighth in the Premier League table with 14 points from their opening 10 matches.
