Michael Carrick has insisted he will do what is best for Manchester United when asked whether he would strip Bruno Fernandes of the captaincy or drop him against Bournemouth on Sunday.
The Red Devils manager addressed the issue at his press conference ahead of the crunch Premier League meeting at Old Trafford.
Asked whether removing the armband or leaving Fernandes out were options he would consider, Carrick replied: "I'll always do what's best for the football club."
His answer offered no guarantee over either the midfielder's selection or his captaincy, while stopping short of announcing any action against him.
Carrick also rejected suggestions of a dressing-room split, saying it was "not divided" when questioned about players speaking out publicly.
The exchanges followed a six-minute opening address in which the manager acknowledged United's failings and promised to restore the connection with supporters.
