Premier League power rankings: Who's closing in on Arsenal?
Premier League power rankings: Who's closing in on Arsenal?

Another round of Premier League matches is in the books and Arsenal continue to set the tone.

There were some results over the weekend that raised some eyebrows and upset the established order, with Brighton's victory at the Etihad over Manchester City perhaps the most notable one.

We try to make sense of it all in the latest power rankings, which are not meant to look at the overall picture, but rather to provide a snapshot based on current form, strength of opposition, and other factors. As always, these rankings are based solely on Premier League play.

Here are our Premier League power rankings after Matchday 9.

1. Arsenal (—)

Everyone knows how good a defensive side the Gunners are, but they turned it up to 1000 with their masterclass against Liverpool at Anfield, as they held their hosts to zero shots on target.

That was the first time Liverpool have ever been without a shot on target at home in the Premier League era, and it further establishes that the path to league success currently runs through Arsenal.

Next match: Nov. 7 vs. Hull

2. Brentford (▲2)

The Bees continue to impress through the opening months of the season, and their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest means they've lost just once in their last four league fixtures.

Next match: Nov. 8 at Brighton

3. Brighton (▼1)

The Seagulls went into Manchester City's home and left with three points, reaffirming their status as one of the teams to be feared.

Next match: Nov. 8 vs. Brentford

4. Manchester City (▼1)

City's defeat to Brighton was their second league loss in a row.

Suddenly the Sky Blues are looking human, with Enzo Maresca needing an uplifting result quickly.

Next match: Nov. 7 at Nottingham Forest

5. Liverpool (▲1)

The Reds fell to Arsenal at home without generating a single shot on target, yet they shouldn't feel too disheartened by that result.

They outplayed the Gunners for long stretches but ran into the best defence in the world, something they won't have to deal with again until 2027.

Next match: Nov. 8 at Crystal Palace

6. Leeds (▼1)

A 2-0 loss at Bournemouth is not the end of the world, but Leeds' form is trending downward.

Next match: Nov. 7 vs. Tottenham

7. Chelsea (▲1)

The Blues ran Manchester United off the pitch over the weekend and have won three of their last four games in the Premier League.

Next match: Nov. 8 at Sunderland

8. Bournemouth (▲4)

The Cherries are winners of three straight after disposing of Leeds on Halloween.

They are the biggest climbers in this week's power rankings.

Next match: Nov. 8 at Ipswich Town

9. Aston Villa (▼2)

Villa drew visiting Fulham 1-1 on the weekend, extending their undefeated streak to five games.

Next match: Nov. 8 at Manchester United

10. Ipswich Town (▼1)

Back-to-back draws for Ipswich after their 2-2 result at Hull.

Next match: Nov. 8 vs. Bournemouth

11. Tottenham (▲3)

It's now three wins in a row for Spurs following their two-goal victory over Crystal Palace.

Tottenham's shaking off their horrific start to the campaign and actually looking like a Big 6 club in recent weeks.

Next match: Nov. 7 at Leeds

12. Manchester United (▼1)

The Red Devils continue to disappoint and are now one of just three teams with a single win in the Premier League this season.

Next match: Nov. 8 vs. Aston Villa

13. Hull (▼3)

Hull's winless run continues after their home draw with Ipswich Town over the weekend.

All early season good vibes have been completely erased as reality sets in.

Next match: Nov.. 7 at Arsenal

14. Everton (▲2)

A gutsy victory at Newcastle halted a three-match winless skid for the Toffees.

Next match: Nov. 6 vs. Coventry

15. Fulham (—)

The Cottagers escaped Villa Park with a creditable draw, and they are now unbeaten in three.

Next match: Nov. 7 vs. Newcastle

16. Coventry (▲2)

All Coventry needed to stop a mini losing skid was a home match against woeful Sunderland.

Next match: Nov. 6 at Everton

17. Newcastle (▼4)

The Magpies have now lost three of their last four matches and are uninspiring to say the least.

Next match: Nov. 7 at Fulham

18. Crystal Palace (▼1)

Not only did Palace lose the match to Tottenham, they also lost their most dangerous striker to a red card in the process.

Next match: Nov. 8 vs. Liverpool

19. Nottingham Forest (—)

Forest put in a forgettable performance in a forgettable loss to Brentford.

Next match: Nov. 7 vs. Manchester City

20. Sunderland (—)

The Black Cats hold the unenviable title of bottom-feeders in both these rankings and in the real life Premier League standings.

Another listless defeat further solidified their place in the basement.

Next match: Nov. 8 vs. Chelsea
