A Lanarkshire schoolgirl has her sights on the top prize as she prepares to compete at the British Indoor Karting Championships later this month.

Zoe McLellan, from Cumbernauld, only picked up the sport 10 months ago, but has had an incredible rise, recently qualifying for the national finals in Warrington on November 14.

Competing in the cadets category, the 12-year-old has come through local and regional qualifiers throughout the journey, including an impressive second-place finish against other youngsters from Hull and Newcastle.

However, Zoe who decided to get into the sport inspired by her love of Formula 1 and Dutch driver Max Verstappen, is aiming for one spot higher.

Dad, George, told Glasgow Live: "She started at Cambuslang last December and has gone from strength to strength.

"Back in September, she won the local finals for the British Indoor Karting Championships (BIKC), which qualified her for the regional finals in Liverpool, where she came second out of 25.

"I think she'll do well, but it's the best of the best. No Scot has ever won it and no female has ever won BIKC since it started in 2020, so she's going for history.

"Zoe can't wait. She's got a lot of nerves but she's very competitive."

For Zoe, the stakes are high, with a win allowing her to enter Club 100 - renowned for being the highest level of “arrive & drive” championship kart racing in the UK.

George also hopes it will mean more sponsorship opportunities for the budding driver.

He added: "Being a girl, she'll certainly be noticed if she wins it and raises her profile.

"Club 101 is the next step up. Previous winners from there have gone on to compete in Formula 4 and Formula 3.

"We have one or two sponsors interested in being part of it, but we're asking to wait until after BIKC as she wants to get a custom suit for next year.

"I want her to do well, but you've got hundreds of kids with the same dream. It's exciting and I love watching her."
