U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has questioned the New York Yankees’ decision to retain manager Aaron Boone, calling for changes within the organization after another disappointing season.
The Yankees’ 2026 postseason campaign had a dramatic start, as they swept their rivals, the Boston Red Sox, in the Wild Card Series. However, their run ended abruptly in the ALDS, where the Tampa Bay Rays swept them 3-0. The Yankees failed to hold a lead in any of the series’ 27 innings.
Following the team’s elimination, former Yankees catcher Jorge Posada said that he no longer felt welcomed or valued by the organization. Meanwhile, general manager Brian Cashman and Boone were confirmed to return for the 2027 season, a decision that frustrated sections of the fanbase, including Ocasio-Cortez.
During an interview with Maddy of WAG Talk and Enjoy Basketball at a Buffalo Bills watch party, Ocasio-Cortez expressed disappointment over Posada’s comments. She urged the Yankees to reconnect with their former stars and restore the culture that once defined the franchise. Taking aim at Boone and the team’s front office, she said:
“I don’t know what Aaron Boone has on the front office. But I don’t want, I just, we gotta shake things up, and we’re gonna have different results. Very sad to hear what Jorge Posada had to say about feeling welcomed. We’ve got to be bringing in the legacy on the team. To those standards of excellence, and I wanna see that culture back. I wanna see those standards back. You know, I want to see Jeter, Posada, Mariano. I want to see everybody back. That’s what we want,” said Ocasio-Cortez.
The Yankees finished their five-game 2026 postseason run with a .238 batting average, 38 hits, and six home runs.
After the Yankees were eliminated by the Rays, Aaron Boone addressed reporters during his postgame press conference. Asked about his contract status and future with the team, the manager declined to discuss the matter, saying he wanted to focus on the players and reflect on the season.
“Yeah, of course. That’s for another day. Right now is about trying to reflect on this. Trying to connect with guys as much as I can. Appreciative of a lot of things, but those conversations and things,” said Aaron Boone.
Boone also spoke about the disappointment of the postseason exit, describing how difficult it was for the team after months of preparation and hard work.
He explained that spending eight or nine months working toward a shared goal only to return home without achieving it was heartbreaking. He added that the disappointment was difficult to put into words given how much the players and staff had invested in the season and how much it meant to them.
