Inter and Surelywood seal major cup upsets in ties

Inter, who had only won one of their opening five league games in division two going into the tie with Rifle FC, came through 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Inter twice had to come from behind, James Oldham cancelling out a Luke Gymer goal for the home side. In the second half, before Ioan Vranceanu headed home a second equaliser after Callum Tobin had again given Rifle the advantage. Both sides had chances to win the game before the tie went to penalties, and it was Inter’s keeper Ryan Exley who proved to be the key man in the shoot-out, saving Rifle’s fifth kick, before veteran Chris Stead converted Inter’s fifth kick to win the tie.

Surelywood beat Watford Youth Sports 6-1. Jack Brady struck a hat-trick for the second division side, along with a double from Riley Lawrence, and a single goal from Jack Cheshire. Oliver Frost scored the Sports consolation goal.

Batchworth needed penalties to overcome Abbots Wanderers after a 3-3 draw, before winning the shoot-out 3-2. Batchworth looked to be cruising to victory in the first half as they built up a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Max Westlake and Kai Henderson, who turned in a rebound, but Abbots netted just before half-time through Miles Cash, which changed the whole direction of the game in the second half, as Abbots scored twice more through Tommy Ash and the experienced Chris Blunden, but late on Batchworth managed to force the shoot-out when Gabriel Neves managed to net after a goal mouth scramble. Luke Parry was the star man for Batchworth in the shoot-out as he saved two Abbots kicks, with Will Cloke slotting home the winning kick.

Sparta Phoenix overcame Nascot AFC 4-2 after an entertaining clash. George Baker gave Sparta the lead with a well struck half-volley, before Matthew Henderson levelled the scores before Jordan Gutteridge powered home a close-range header to restore Sparta’s advantage, but once again Nascot levelled thanks to a Billy Tyson penalty. In the second half Sparta sealed the win thanks to a Louis Moore header and Jordan Gutteridge finding the net with his second.

A Lucas Bennett goal was enough for Langleybury CC to beat West Herts.

Denis Jackson Intermediate Cup First Round - The outstanding game in the first round saw Chorleywood Chess beat Dome Bar 2-0 in a special game for referee Malcolm Edwards, who officiated at his 2,500th game.

Teddy Thompsertt scored both goals for the home side, who will face The Partridge in the second round.

Middlesex FA Premier Cup First Round - Broadfields United suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Olympia FC. Billy Smith got the United sole goal.

Premier Division - Evergreen moved up to third place in the table with a 2-0 win over Hertfordshire Athletic. Evergreen took the lead inside 15 minutes when a ball across the goal was turned into his own net by the Herts centre-back. Herts gradually grew into the game and were awarded a penalty, but it was missed. Both sides created chances in the second half before Evergreen sealed the victory late on, when Tom Verbena was played through on goal and calmly slotted the ball across the keeper.

Forza Watford and St Josephs shared the points after a 2-2 draw. All the goals came in the second half. Ben Foley gave Joes the lead when he lobbed the ball home, but the home side, thanks to goals from Conner Powell and Clayton Blake, looked to have taken the three points for Forza before stoppage time sub, Jude Brasenell, stabbed home from eight yards after a goal mouth scramble after the ball had been cleared off the line twice.

Division One - The Partridge and Woodside drew 1-1. Owen Ayres gave the home side the lead in the first half, before Woodside levelled in the second period, when Chris Colman scored a fine solo goal, beating three defenders and finishing into the bottom corner.

Division Two - SFC Wealdstone gained a first ever league win after they beat AFC Watford 2-1. After a goalless first half, goals from Will Farrar, and a late Frankie Morehouse free-kick, were enough to get a win on the board either side of a Peter Rock goal for AFC.
