FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono could face football disciplinary action and a police investigation following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel after a collision during a Spanish second-division match. The incident occurred on November 2, 2026, when Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge the forward during stoppage time.
The challenge resulted in a straight red card for the goalkeeper, while de Miguel collapsed on the pitch and required immediate medical attention. The 30-year-old was taken to hospital but died on November 3. Spanish authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, including possible involuntary manslaughter.
The incident took place during the La Liga 2 fixture between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.
As de Miguel attempted to reach a long ball, Owono came off his goal line to intercept him. The goalkeeper's raised knee struck the Tenerife forward during the challenge, leaving him seriously injured.
Match officials showed Owono a straight red card. Medical personnel immediately attended to de Miguel, who suffered a cardiac arrest and was transported to hospital. The match was subsequently abandoned.
His death has prompted an investigation into the incident and raised questions about the potential consequences for the goalkeeper.
Jesús Owono is a 25-year-old goalkeeper who represents FC Andorra and the Equatorial Guinea national team.
Born in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, Owono moved to Spain as a child and developed his football career in the Basque Country. He played youth football for Antiguoko and Real Sociedad before joining Deportivo Alavés in 2017.
Owono made his senior debut for Alavés in January 2022 and subsequently gained experience through a loan spell at FC Andorra. He returned to the club permanently in August 2026.
At international level, Owono has represented Equatorial Guinea on numerous occasions, establishing himself as an important figure in the national side.

Owono could face separate sporting and legal proceedings. Under Spanish football disciplinary regulations, violent conduct resulting in serious injury can attract a suspension ranging from four to 12 matches. The relevant disciplinary authorities will need to examine the challenge and determine whether the incident falls within that category. However, the red card itself does not establish criminal responsibility.
Spanish police have also opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter. Under Article 142 of Spain's Penal Code, gross negligence resulting in death can carry a prison sentence of one to four years. Less serious negligence can attract a financial penalty.
Any criminal liability would depend on evidence establishing negligence and a legally relevant connection between the goalkeeper's actions and de Miguel's death.
No final criminal judgment or disciplinary sanction has been established in the reports. The investigation remains crucial to determining the circumstances of the collision and whether any wrongdoing occurred. The tragedy has also exposed Owono to intense criticism and online abuse, including racist comments.
The goalkeeper faces an uncertain period as authorities examine the incident. The central question is whether the challenge was an unfortunate sporting accident or involved negligence that could carry legal consequences.
