Could Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers be destined for another Super Bowl ring together, this time with the Pittsburgh Steelers? Based on the franchise's start to the season through its first eight games, it could be a legitimate possibility.
After Mike Tomlin stepped down last season amid a 19-year run that felt stagnant toward the end, the Steelers turned to Steel City native Mike McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl in Green Bay with current Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. And since reuniting this season, the two have helped lead the Steelers to a 6-2 start – and historically, seasons that begin with that record have been kind to Pittsburgh.
In the Super Bowl era, the Steelers have started 6-2 or better through their first eight games 21 times. When looking at the franchise's history, the Steelers have started 6-2 or better through their first eight games 21 times in the Super Bowl era. Only once, in 2009, did they fail to make the playoffs after such a start. In 1979, 2005, and 2008, the franchise would get off to a 6-2 start and follow it up by winning the Super Bowl in all three of those years.
Now, that's certainly not a guarantee Rodgers will capture another Super Bowl ring before retirement, or that the Steelers are bound for their seventh Super Bowl championship this season. After all, there is still a lot of football left to play, and the AFC is currently wide open. But history suggests the Steelers are exactly where they want to be, with just about half the season wrapped up.
