Oldham Athletic (A): What Should Sheffield Wednesday Expect?
Sheffield Wednesday's Kop

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Oldham Athletic in the first round of the FA Cup. The game will be Dave Challinor’s first as Wednesday boss and is a chance for him to demonstrate what’s to come from his side.

The game, which is live on TNT on Sunday at 5:15, is also a chance for Wednesday players to show their abilities to the new manager, but Oldham will be a stern test.

Wednesday’s hosts on Sunday are currently 18th in League Two and come into the game on the back of a win against Northampton Town in midweek. The result moved the Latics three points above the drop zone, but they have played at least a game more than most teams below them.

Sunday will come as a welcome break from the league for both teams, but what should Sheffield Wednesday expect from Oldham?

Oldham Athletic’s Last Five Games

The Latics have won two of their last five, with their victory on Tuesday ending their three-game wait for a victory. Their last five results were:

  • Northampton 0-1 Oldham
  • Oldham 0-1 Crawley Town
  • Barnet 1-1 Oldham
  • Walsall 3-0 Oldham
  • Oldham 4-1 Cheltenham Town.

Oldham’s Last Starting 11

According to Sofascore, Oldham lined up in a 3-4-1-2 in their victory against Northampton. If that’s the case on Sunday, that will provide a good man-for-man battle if Wednesday too play with three at the back. Their lineup consisted of:

Hudson; Sutton, Daniels, Monthe; Scott-Morriss, Norburn, Pett, Robson; Chilvers (Nevitt, 58); Fondop, Kavanagh (Hammond, 78).

The unused substitutes that day were Aston Wilson, Zain Tahir, Lewis Temple, Favour Fawunmi, and Josh Hawkes.

Oldham Team News

Oldham will be without two players through suspension. Kai Payne and Kane Drummond were both sent off in their defeat to Crawley, and the club’s appeal was unsuccessful.

Elliott Nevitt returned to the Oldham squad on Tuesday night; Sunday might be a chance to start him.

Who Sheffield Wednesday Need to Watch Out for

Oldham have several players the Owls will need to watch out for in this FA Cup game.

Top Performer

Experienced midfielder Ollie Norburn has been their standout player this season. The 34-year-old has the highest average Sofascore rating in their squad with a 7.17.

Norburn got his first league goal of the season on Tuesday, helping his side win 1-0. He picked up the Sofascore Man of the Match in that game with an 8.6 rating.

Goal Threat

Forward Calum Kavanagh is Oldham’s leading scorer with five goals in League Two. The 23-year-old has a goal every 212 minutes, the best scoring frequency in the team. Kavanagh also leads the side for shots per game (3.4) and shots on target per game (0.9).

If anyone is going to score for the Latics on Sunday, Kavanagh is likely going to be the player.

Creative Sparks

Kavanagh also leads the Oldham side in assists with four in League Two. He is well ahead of his expected assists that currently stands at 0.69.

Three players are tied on five big chances created for the Latics. Norburn, Kavanagh, and Drummond all have created five big chances this season. Norburn has the highest key passes per match with 1.6.
