After a dominant rookie season in which he hauled in 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, Brian Thomas Jr. looked like he was set to become the NFL’s next superstar receiver. Yet, now in his third season, BTJ has recorded just 824 yards and four touchdowns in 21 games since.
Now, the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is one of the league’s most popular trade candidates as the Nov. 10 deadline approaches. While he’s still just 24 years old, on a winning team and under contract through 2027, Thomas Jr. is sinking on Jacksonville’s depth chart. As a result, it may be time to trade the once-promising receiver to the highest bidder, and there are several teams that have expressed interest. Here are six teams who could wind up with Thomas before the deadline passes.
It’s a wonder that Kirk Cousins is second in touchdown passes, because his receiving corps is unproven. While Brock Bowers is a rockstar, Cousins’ second-most frequent target has actually been running back Ashton Jeanty. Swinging on Jalen Nailor in free agency hasn’t panned out, and last year’s second-round pick, Jack Bech, just returned after a four-game absence, but drew zero targets. Thus, whether it’s to help boost the passing attack for the rest of this season or by trying to surround Fernando Mendoza with targets in the future, the Raiders should consider trading for the 6-foot-2, 209-pound receiver.
Sure, the Washington Commanders are 2-4-1, but they’re just two games behind the NFC East division leaders, whom they tied with earlier this season. Meanwhile, one of the Commanders’ biggest weaknesses for multiple years now is not having a consistent group of pass-catchers. While Thomas has inconsistency issues of his own, Jayden Daniels was also his QB together at LSU. That could lead to better chemistry, and possibly the ideal change of scenery that Thomas desperately needs.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a bona fide superstar, but Sam Darnold hasn’t been able to have any success with any other receiver on the Seattle Seahawks’ roster. The Seahawks have fallen to 4-4 since trading for Quenton Nelson, which is obviously not the direction they expected. Rather, the Seahawks could try to turn around their fate by giving the passing attack a much-needed boost now that they’ve bought the quarterback a bit more time in the pocket.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have combed through several second-tier receiver options in recent years. Yet, they’ve also expressed an interest in taking a chance on some freakish talents, such as D.K. Metcalf. Could they repeat history by gambling on Thomas Jr. turning his career around in Pittsburgh too? He wouldn’t be the first receiver to head to the Steelers and rediscover his talents.
Who wouldn’t want to play with Patrick Mahomes? With Xavier Worthy proving unreliable, and Tyquan Thornton still out for several weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs need a contingency plan. Thomas Jr. wouldn’t just immediately become one of their best options; he could potentially become a dominant receiver for years to come in Kansas City.
With both Puka Nacua and Davante Adams playing on expiring contracts, the Los Angeles Rams should have one eye toward the future when it comes to finding more playmaking receivers. Thomas Jr. could learn from Nacua in a multitude of ways, becoming more reliable with his hands while working on his ball-tracking abilities in L.A., where there won’t be any wind or rain to throw his game off.
