Hearts player ratings as fringe man a standout in new position

Unfortunate to be beaten from the penalty spot, as he was punished for throwing himself towards the left corner as Mo Salah passed down the middle, just inches from the goalkeeper's boot. Made some important stops to keep the score down in the first half. Had little chance at stopping Franculino Dju's brilliant second. Should still take confidence from this display even despite conceding twice.

Rogers Mato 8

Playing out of position and up against Mo Salah, this ought to have been a horrible night for the Ugandan winger. But he was superb and seriously impressed in his efforts in Turkey. Gained confidence after winning an early duel with Salah and repeatedly carried out defensive duties well, with immense recovery work even after being initially beaten. A huge positive and provides a possible solution for Wouter Vrancken as he navigates a period without a host of key players.

Jamie McCart 6

A decent night for the defender as Hearts were much-improved even in defeat. Stood up well to the test of containing a seriously threatening Trabzonspor frontline. A little frustrated in moments, with Tomas Magnusson facing his fury after a questionable pass inside the box. Scooped the ball wide of the target after a Fagan-Walcott chance when he should have fired at goal.

Malachi Fagan-Walcott 5

Should have had Hearts in front in the first half. Was picked out in the box from a Calvin Miller corner but somehow only managed to head off the post from close range. Shrugged off a major injury concern before the break to play the full 90 minutes.

Christian Borchgrevink 5

Another huge concern for Hearts with the defender forced off with a suspected hamstring problem. Tried to play on, but it was clear his night was done by a nasty-looking knock. Had performed fairly well in a patched-up backline before his night was curtailed by injury. A slight worry he had fouled in the area after a tangle of legs but ref was unmoved.

Tomas Magnusson 5

Another player who will leave feeling better about himself after the weekend, but needs to up his level in the midfield. Put his team-mates under pressure in moments with some strange choice of pass. Was so clumsy to gift away penalty as he failed to show any awareness before catching Dju with his knee to send the forward to the ground.

Sabri Guendouz 6

Showed some glimpses of real on-the-ball quality. Possesses the ability to carve open defences and orchestrated some nice attacking phases of play at times. Was committed in the engine room, too. But just not able to really make any of it pay on the night for Hearts.

Jordi Altena 6

Deployed in midfield in Turkey as Mato shifted into defence. Keen to get touches on the ball and showed his passing range with a couple of raking switches to Calvin Miller. Ordinarily a right back, but looked comfortable in the centre of the park. Survived a handball penalty scare as an offside in the build-up saw Spaniard left very relieved after being hit in the arm from a cross.

Calvin Miller 6

Involved in a tussle down the flank all night with Sidny Lopes Cabral, who would eventually be sent off. Looked lively but opportunities to create were too sparse if Hearts were to have any chance of taking anything from this. Hearts should be funnelling the ball to him at every opportunity, to create and to simply relieve some pressure.

Claudio Braga 6

A talisman for Hearts but couldn't conjure up any matchwinning magic in Trabzon. Some really neat touches of the ball and looked a threat with some of his pace and trickery in the final third. Didn't overly appeal for a penalty when he should have after being bundled over in the box.

James Wilson 6

A thankless task up top on his own. Plenty of endeavour in his running and pressing, but not many touches of the ball in any dangerous positions. No real clear-cut sight of goal for the Scotland international on a night where his work off the ball was more important.

Stephen Kingsley (for Borchgrevink, 45) 5

An enforced change as Borchgrevink was forced off. Slotted in at right-back without any issues.

Josh McPake (for Guendouz, 74) 3

Direct running looked like it could have hurt Trabzonspor but didn't happen often enough, not through any fault of his own.

Sabah Kerjota (for Miller, 74) 3

Keen to get on the ball and did okay in this cameo outing, but without any telling impact.

JJ Williams (for Wilson, 74) 3

Showed some positive hold-up play as neat touches opened up attacks for Hearts. Needs to do it consistently to force his way into the starting XI.

Landry Kabore (for Braga, 90) 2

On for the final minutes. Barely had a kick in a rare outing after sitting out the last six league matches.
