LaNorris Sellers accounts for 5 TDs as South Carolina tops Oklahoma

The Gamecocks racked up 521 total yards and held the Sooners to 10 points into the fourth quarter, though running back Matt Fuller suffered a likely season-ending foot injury.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) LaNorris Sellers passed for 301 yards and three touchdowns, and South Carolina's defense limited Oklahoma to 118 yards and 10 points through three quarters of a 42-25 win on Saturday.

Sellers, who also ran for 96 yards and two scores, threw touchdown passes of 84 yards to DJ Black and 79 yards to Mazeo Bennett Jr. to help South Carolina (5-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) build a 35-10 lead on the way to its third straight win.

“Really awesome night, proud of our football team,” South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. “We challenged them all week. Nobody in the SEC has been able to do what we did tonight, and that's come off a big win and follow it up the very next week with another big win.”

The Gamecocks were coming off back-to-back wins over ranked teams in Florida and Tennessee.

“This is a big win, to come on the road and play like we did tonight,” Beamer continued. “Our guys deserve it, though, they put a lot into this and I'm really proud of them.”

The offense came to life for Oklahoma (4-4, 2-3) in the fourth quarter, with John Mateer throwing a pair of scoring passes to Ivan Carreon to help the Sooners cut into the lead.

Kip Lewis returned a Sellers interception 30 yards for a score to pull Oklahoma even at 7-7 early in the second quarter. It was the third pick-6 of Lewis' career and matched a school record, but one of the few things Oklahoma's defense did right all game.

“We got our ass whooped tonight in every way,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said. “Really disappointed. I watched the game, everybody else watched the game. They were a more physical team and created explosive plays. We couldn't get any offensive rhythm in the first half. We're not built to overcome some of the ineptness as a football team that we displayed out there tonight.”

It was all Sellers and South Carolina after Lewis' interception return. He led the Gamecocks on three successive scoring drives - two covering 75 yards - and the lead ballooned to 28-10 at halftime.

Mateer and the Sooners were booed as they ran off the field.

“We're frustrated, too,” Mateer said. “I won't sleep peacefully tonight and I don't think anybody in this building will. I wish it could have been better. We'll go back to work Monday ... and do everything we can to make it better.”

South Carolina: The Gamecocks have Oklahoma's number in Norman, outscoring the Sooners 77-34 in two games played at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Oklahoma: The Sooners' defense, among the best in the country coming in, couldn't contain Sellers or the Gamecocks, who rolled up 521 yards of total offense.

South Carolina running back Matt Fuller, who entered Saturday's game with 513 yards rushing, left the game in the first quarter and did not return after carrying four times for 17 yards.

“It doesn't look good on Matt,” Beamer said. “Unless we get some better news overnight, probably season-ending. He's scheduled to have surgery tomorrow morning. It looks like a broke bone in his foot, lower leg area."

Oklahoma's defense, which ranked first nationally in opponent first downs with 13.6 per game and second in third-down conversion defense (23.6%) prior to Saturday's game, surrendered 22 first downs and allowed the Gamecocks to convert eight of 14 third downs.

South Carolina: Hosts Texas A&M on Saturday.

Oklahoma: Plays at No. 17 Florida on Saturday.
