Roy Keane takes swipe at Rod Stewart over retirement

The former Hoops midfielder joked about the lifelong Celtic fan during a discussion on The Overlap podcast alongside Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Jill Scott.

Discussing Stewart's decision to retire from touring, Keane could barely contain his delight.

He said: "And we got good news he's retired from going on tour, isn't he, Rod Stewart?

"What good news that is! Wow.

"Should have done it 20 years ago!"

Keane then joked that the decision could free up more time for Stewart to follow Celtic.

He continued: "I heard on the radio he's stopped touring. I'm like in the car screaming 'yessss, wow'. Now he can go to more Celtic games."

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright recalled seeing Stewart perform at Wembley in the 1990s and joked about the singer allowing the crowd to take over parts of his songs.

Wright said: "I remember going to see him at Wembley once and I remember thinking to myself, he's out of touch.

"He just starts singing a couple of lines, everyone sings the song for him!

"It's an amazing gig, he's sitting kicking footballs into the crowd."

Keane quickly seized on how long ago the concert had taken place.

He said: "And what year is that going back, like donkey's years?"

After Wright admitted it was during the 1990s and praised Stewart's "very soulful" voice from the time, Keane replied: "Yeah, 30 years ago. We were good players 30 years ago, we're not anymore are we?"

Jill Scott then asked how old Stewart was, prompting another dig from Keane.

He joked: "Aw I'm going to say 100, 112."

Gary Neville responded that Stewart is 81.

Keane also poked fun at Stewart's previous cancelled performances, claiming he had spotted the singer attending football shortly afterwards.

He said: "And he's announced his retirement from touring. He did cancel about 60 gigs in the last two years, you know, when he wasn't feeling well, you know what I mean?

"And then the next night he's at a Scotland match, you know what I mean. Forget the people who travelled thousands of miles."
