Portishead Town Ladies win 2-0 at St Agnes in FA Cup

Now unbeaten for two months straight with eight games played, the Posset girls made the long journey down south on the weekend to face the Aggies in the first round proper.

A landmark occasion for the Cornish side (it being the furthest they had ever progressed in the FA Cup), the game attracted a total of 355 spectators, a remarkable number for a women's team in the sixth tier.

The seemingly endless rain in the days leading up to the event left many wondering whether it would even go ahead, but in the end it would turn out to be a mostly sunny Sunday.

One constant, however, was the relentless wind coming in from the coast, which caused a lot of trouble for Portishead in the first half.

Playing at the more exposed end of the pitch, set pieces and even simple passes seemed increasingly difficult as the minute ticked by.

Along with some rather varied elevation of the pitch itself, it was posing the exact kind of challenge that St Agnes would have been hoping for.

Despite hitting the crossbar with one shot and coming close to finding an opener with some others, it would remain goalless heading into the break.

Switching sides for the next 45, Portishead were now playing with the low autumn sun in their eyes, but clearly it was still preferable compared to the wind tunnel at the opposite end.

Shielded by the trees and raised grass embankment, the elements were no longer a limiting factor, allowing them to keep St Agnes pinned in their own box for the majority of the half.

After what seemed an eternity, Portishead finally had a breakthrough.

A great attempt from Alanna Torrington to chip the keeper bounced back off the crossbar, but then dropped to the feet of Mia Blazey to break the deadlock in the 55th minute with a tap-in.

Just under five minutes later, the visitors were maintaining the pressure, making some well-worked passes around the defence before finding captain Shannon Holloway on the wing.

Her whipped ball across the box was placed perfectly for Mathilda Knight to put it away, extending Portishead's lead and making it her fourth goal in three games.

The rest of the game was much of the same as Portishead searched for more, but some fantastic saves by the St Agnes keeper and the occasional counter-attack attempt meant it would ultimately remain 2-0 to Portishead.

While it had likely been a closer result than expected, Portishead got the job done and secured themselves another round of FA Cup action.

They now look forward to their next league fixture against Sherborne Town on Sunday, November 1, and presumably will be feeling grateful to be back at home.
