Washington State quarterback commit Ryan Harrington put together one of the most remarkable performances in high school football history Friday night.

The Anacortes High School senior threw for 704 yards and 10 touchdowns in a 68-20 victory over Sehome, breaking Washington’s single-game passing record and tying the state record for touchdown passes in a game.

Harrington completed 26 of 38 passes in the victory, surpassing the previous state record of 613 passing yards set by Brett Rypien of Shadle Park in 2013.

Rypien went on to play at Boise State before reaching the NFL, where he currently plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Harrington’s performance puts him among a small group of high school quarterbacks nationally to surpass 700 passing yards in a single game. According to reports, the last quarterback to throw for more than 700 yards in a high school game was Peyton Houston, who passed for 817 yards for Evangel Christian Academy in Louisiana in 2024.

Ryan Harrington Ties Washington Touchdown Record

Harrington’s 10 touchdown passes tied the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s single-game record.

Nathaniel Holcomb of Puyallup set the mark in 2016, while Sam Huard of Kennedy Catholic matched it in 2018. Huard is the son of former NFL quarterback Damon Huard.

Harrington reached the milestone in dramatic fashion. With 20 seconds remaining in Friday’s game, he connected with fellow senior Dre Quintino on a 49-yard touchdown pass, giving him his 10th scoring pass of the night.

Harrington said he had been informed of the touchdown record during the game and wanted the opportunity to reach it.

“I don’t like to play selfish,” Harrington told SI.com. “But this is the one time I wanted to be selfish.”

The passing-yardage record came as a surprise. Harrington learned just how much he had accomplished later that night after receiving a text message from Anacortes coach Justin Portz, according to SI.com’s report.

“It didn’t feel real,” Harrington said.

Portz said the opportunity to make history became clear as the game progressed and Sehome continued to blitz defensively.

“I was thinking last night, in the moment, that maybe there was a coach out there who really feels the right thing to do is take a knee,” Portz said. “I was thinking, ‘You do not get this opportunity very often to let one of your kids break a record, so let’s go for it!’”

“We didn’t go into the game thinking it, but it was presented to us (by how Sehome was blitzing so often on defense) – so why not put this exclamation point on his career at Anacortes.”

Washington State Commit Continues Historic Season

Harrington’s record-setting night continued what has been a dominant stretch for the senior quarterback.

In his previous game, a 49-13 victory over Bellingham, Harrington threw for 413 yards and six touchdowns.

Over the past two games, he has combined for 1,117 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, putting him among the most productive quarterbacks in the country.

Harrington has thrown for 2,424 yards and 32 touchdowns this season, helping Anacortes build a 7-1 record.

The 6-foot-1 quarterback also has an impressive postseason history. He has helped Anacortes win two Class 2A state championships, including during his sophomore season, when he threw for more than 1,700 yards while sharing quarterback duties.

Harrington passed for 3,372 yards as a junior as Anacortes finished 7-3.

Now committed to Washington State, Harrington has added a historic individual achievement to his high school résumé. His 704-yard performance broke a state record that had stood for 13 years and placed him among a select group of quarterbacks to reach that milestone nationally.
