We've got plenty of players as Marnus Labuschagne's replacement, says Usman Khawaja

Former Australia batter suggests Sheffield Shield performers could challenge Labuschagne's Test spot after poor form in South Africa.

Marnus Labuschagne's position in Australia's Test team faces mounting pressure following a difficult tour of South Africa. Across four innings in the ongoing series, Labuschagne has recorded scores of 37, 37, 14 and 39. His struggles extend beyond the current tour, with disappointing performances against Bangladesh where he lost his wickets for single digits in two of three innings. Most significantly, Labuschagne has not scored a Test century in 47 innings, a drought spanning more than three years. He gave away his wicket at an important moment in the second innings of the 2nd Test when the visitors were trying to save the match.

Naturally, scrutiny around his spot has intensified further. Former Australia batter Usman Khawaja has publicly suggested that multiple Sheffield Shield performers are producing comparable domestic statistics and could potentially challenge for Labuschagne's Test berth. Speaking on Fox Cricket, Khawaja outlined five candidates who merit consideration for selection.

"We've got plenty of players in Sheffield Shield cricket who are very good players, who are pretty much averaging and doing the same as Marnus in that respect," Khawaja said on Fox Cricket.

Who are Khawaja's five candidates to replace Labuschagne?

Kurtis Patterson emerged as Khawaja's first candidate. Patterson averages approximately 39 in Sheffield Shield cricket, marginally above Labuschagne's 38, and has recently scored a century alongside consistent run-scoring. Patterson's two Test appearances came in 2019 against Sri Lanka, when he also smashed a century. Overall, Patterson has played 122 first-class matches and has begun the current season with a century and a fifty across three innings.

Peter Handscomb represents another option, having played 20 Tests for Australia with both centuries coming from the number five position. However, Handscomb has not featured in Test cricket for three years. His recent form raises concerns, as he was dismissed for a pair in an unofficial Test series against India and has not scored a fifty in his last 10 matches across all formats dating back to February this year. During the previous Shield season, Handscomb was the leading run-scorer with 724 runs across 11 matches.

Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris round out the experienced contingent among Khawaja's suggestions. Bancroft has 10 Test appearances while Harris has 14, though neither has enjoyed strong recent form. Harris did score twin fifties in his latest Shield outing, ending a sequence of 12 first-class innings without a fifty-plus score. Bancroft finished as the third-highest scorer in the previous Shield season but has not yet gained momentum in the current campaign.

Jack Clayton stands as the sole uncapped player among Khawaja's five candidates. The 27-year-old left-hand batter has scored six centuries and averages 38 across 42 Sheffield Shield matches. Clayton has begun the ongoing domestic season in strong form, accumulating three fifties across six matches in various formats.

How do Khawaja's candidates compare in domestic cricket?

Khawaja elaborated on the domestic credentials of his five candidates, emphasising that their Sheffield Shield records compared favourably with Labuschagne's own domestic average. He stressed that if Labuschagne's domestic form warranted Test selection, the same logic should apply to the other performers he had identified.

"You've got Kurtis Patterson right now who is scoring the house down. Marnus averages 38 in Sheffield Shield cricket, Kurtis is about 39. He's just scored a hundred, he's been scoring runs the other day. Peter Handscomb, 39, terrific player. Cameron Bancroft, only 32 years old, also at 38 (average). You have Marcus Harris as well. These are all Test players. Jack Clayton, who is a young guy that I played with. He's scored six centuries averaging 38 and no one talks about him," said Khawaja.

"So the narrative of when people devalue Shield cricket, it frustrates me because I'm like, OK, if Marnus is good enough to play for Australia with that Sheffield Shield record, why can't any of these guys play?," he added.
