Joe Gomez jokes about quirky fact overshadowing Liverpool career after heroics

Joe Gomez scored a decisive penalty as Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 in a Carabao Cup shootout at Anfield, before joking about whether his spot-kick counts as a goal after 319 appearances without one

Joe Gomez has jokingly cast doubt over whether his drought-breaking penalty that secured Liverpool's dramatic Carabao Cup triumph over Chelsea should actually be recognized.

Gomez converted from 12 yards before Chelsea center-back Wesley Fofana blazed his attempt wildly wide as the Reds prevailed 6-5 on penalties following a tense 1-1 stalemate in their fourth-round encounter at Anfield on Wednesday.

It marks the first goal of any description the Liverpool defender has netted across his 319 appearances for club and country, with 280 of those coming during more than 11 years on Merseyside. Taking to social media following the match with a laughing emoji, Gomez enquired, "Does that count?" before noting, "On to Sunday," with Liverpool welcoming Arsenal this weekend.

While Gomez remains without a senior goal in the official records, since penalty shootout strikes aren't included in the statistics, there was unanimous agreement in response to his query.

Teammate Alexander Isak replied "for sure" while former Reds colleague Andy Robertson, now at Tottenham, commented: "Wanted a knee slide, I'll be honest!"

Gomez also discussed his penalty at length with ITV Sport afterward, saying: "Everyone's on edge.

"We want to win, and we know we've got the quality. Naturally, for me, it's a moment I'm obviously thinking about and anticipating. It was nice that it went in.

"It means everything to play for this club, and we know every game, especially here, is massive for us, and we want to do our best to represent the shirt.

"Obviously, it's a new management team, and we want to show that fight, show that grit. It's mentality, and I think that's what we're known for, and we're always trying to uphold that standard, and I think we did that.

"It was important that the lads kept on fighting, kept going until the end, and we did that."

Iraola also spoke to ITV after the game and was asked about Gomez's penalty.

The Reds boss replied: "He was also very confident! I knew he would score this."

Iraola added: "It has been a very competitive game.

"It is a great experience. Other players have played a good competitive game, and I think to be in this knockout competition, it gives you experience. They played really well. Let's see who we play in the next one."
