Rams' Aaron Donald mishandles fumble trying to score first career touchdown, sending Myles Garrett into laughter

For all that Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald has accomplished in his 11 NFL seasons, including recording 20.5 sacks in a season and being named to 10 Pro Bowls and nine All-Pro first teams, the future Hall of Famer has not scored a touchdown during his career.

Donald had his first trip to the end zone in his sights during the third quarter of Week 8's intra-city matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was sacked by Rams linebacker Wesley Bailey and fumbled.

With the loose ball bouncing on the turf, Donald ran toward it. And his intent was clear. Donald wasn't going to just jump on the ball and smother it to get the turnover. He wanted to pick the football up and run to the end zone for his first career touchdown.

But as so many football players have discovered in the long history of the game, that oblong-shaped object can be difficult to corral. It doesn't necessarily bounce the way a round ball would. Donald didn't help himself by kicking the ball with his left foot just before he could get his hands on it.

While he may be one of the best athletes to ever play his position, that doesn't necessarily mean that Donald can do everything well. Here, Donald demonstrated why the skills honed over two decades are better suited for defense when handling the ball has not been a part of his regimen.

As Donald lost his balance and fell to the turf, the football bounced between his legs. Other players ran in to try and grab the fumble, and the frenzied scrum sent the ball out of bounds.

There would be no touchdown for Donald. One of the few achievements that has escaped him during his acclaimed career continued to elude his grasp.

One person who may have understood better than anyone was Donald's injured teammate Myles Garrett.

Watching Donald in hot pursuit of the football and a potential touchdown, the fellow All-Pro gleefully laughed from the stationary bike he was riding on the sideline. Garrett was delighted by Donald's effort, knowing how difficult touchdowns are too attain for defensive linemen.

However, Garrett has the touchdown that Donald has never scored.

While with the Cleveland Browns during a Dec. 12. 2021 game, the defensive end recovered a fumble he caused by sacking Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley, forcing him to fumble and scooping up the turnover to run into the end zone.

Garrett scored the lone touchdown of his career in the Browns' 24-22 win on a play during which he also broke Cleveland's team record for sacks in a single season. Five seasons later, he set the NFL record for most sacks during a season.

Sympathizing with Donald's unrequited feelings for a touchdown and praising him for his effort, Garrett gave his teammate a handshake on the Rams' bench.

All in good fun, especially when the Rams defeated the Chargers 24-9 in the NFL battle of Los Angeles to improve to 4-4 for the season.
