Successful run chases have produced some of the most memorable moments in ODI cricket, with batters overcoming enormous targets through explosive strokeplay, crucial partnerships and remarkable composure under pressure. The format has witnessed several successful chases exceeding 350 runs, demonstrating how even seemingly unbeatable totals can be hunted down.

South Africa have achieved the highest successful chase in ODI history, while Sri Lanka recently entered the record books with an extraordinary victory over England. India and the Netherlands have also featured prominently in this list after producing remarkable batting performances to chase down massive targets.

Top 5 highest successful run chases in ODI cricket

1. South Africa chase 435 vs Australia

South Africa produced one of the greatest performances in ODI history against Australia at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on March 12, 2006. Australia posted a mammoth 434/4 in their 50 overs, with captain Ricky Ponting smashing 164 off 105 deliveries. Contributions from other Australian batters helped the visitors set a seemingly impossible target of 435. South Africa responded with extraordinary aggression, led by Herschelle Gibbs, who smashed 175 off just 111 balls.

Captain Graeme Smith provided a blistering start with 90 off 55 deliveries, putting the hosts firmly in contention. Despite losing wickets during the latter stages, Mark Boucher held his nerve and struck the winning boundary off Brett Lee in the final over. South Africa finished at 438/9 in 49.5 overs, completing a historic one-wicket victory and setting the record for the highest successful run chase in ODI cricket.

2. Sri Lanka chase 430 vs England

Sri Lanka produced a historic performance against England in the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 22, 2026. Sri Lanka initially struggled at 24/2 but recovered through Avishka Fernando’s 97 and Pavan Rathnayake’s magnificent 130 off 106 balls.

Dasun Shanaka added a blistering 97 off 50 deliveries before Janith Liyanage finished the chase with an unbeaten 61 off 27 balls.
