Spencer and co. drew 0-0 with third-placed Bradford City in League One on Saturday, securing a point after a positive first half and battling second.
The U's missed a host of good chances in the first period which could have seen them enter half time in the lead, striker Gatlin O'Donkor nodding the best chance of the game wide inside the box.
Defender Spencer performed well at full back, affecting the game positively at both ends of the pitch and, ultimately, helping Aaron Ramsey's men go a seventh game unbeaten in the league.
The Northern Ireland international spent most of the game at right back, before switching to left back when Peter Kioso was brought on in the 63rd minute, playing behind teenage winger Mo Missanga.
Missanga has burst onto the scene this season, scoring one goal and assisting once since making his senior debut on the opening day of the campaign.

After the 18-year-old made his seventh start in the league, Spencer was full of praise for the youngster: "You would think he has been playing for years, the way he can read the game and knows when to attack, knows when to keep the ball.
"I think it's quite amazing to see at his age.
"I think he's someone who's going to have a very, very good career in the game.
"It's about now him just keep building on and keep building on his performances."

For Spencer, his game has taken on new layers under head coach Ramsey, with the 22-year-old, who is widely known for his defensive solidity, adding more frequent attacking threat to his toolbox.
The former Huddersfield Town man continued: "[The manager] wants us to attack.
"There's nothing worse than when you're playing defending as a full-back and you have people overlapping and underlapping you.
"So it's just about making sure that we do it to the other teams as well.
Spencer continued: "I quite enjoy it, to be fair.
"I think I love getting forward...but it's also just being aware when to do it at the right times and that's just something I'm working on as well.
"And then also just that final ball and final delivery."
With the fixtures beginning to pile up now, Oxford go into another top-table clash against second-placed Stockport County on Tuesday, but they do it with some decent momentum.
Spencer finished: "It's really important to keep building on the momentum.
"It's not easy to get clean sheets and be unbeaten in the league.
"And it's also about just building on and keeping it going."
