The cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island has sparked mixed reactions within Aprilia Racing, with CEO Massimo Rivola unable to definitively say whether it benefits or harms the team’s championship aspirations. The decision to call off the race came after safety concerns arose over the medical helicopter’s inability to operate in the deteriorating weather conditions, a critical factor given the circuit's remote location and the necessity of rapid medical evacuation.

From Jorge Martín’s perspective, the cancellation serves as a minor reprieve. The Aprilia rider, who suffered a right radius fracture in Saturday’s sprint race while battling for victory, lost the championship lead to Marc Márquez. Márquez now holds a ten-point advantage over Martín. By not racing, Martín avoids further point losses in Australia, keeping his title chase alive. However, Rivola expressed uncertainty about the overall impact, especially considering Marco Bezzecchi sits third in the standings, 50 points adrift of Márquez.

“I'm not sure,” Rivola admitted during a media session at Phillip Island. “I’m sure Marco is a bit upset because he saw an opportunity, but I think Jorge is happy.” Rivola sympathized with the thousands of fans who traveled to witness the final race at this iconic circuit. “It’s a shame because the last race here deserved a better ending. But that’s how things go.”

The race cancellation was primarily due to the inability to guarantee helicopter flights for emergency evacuation, including landings in Melbourne where the nearest major hospital is located. “Personally, I hadn’t thought about the helicopter problem, but that was the main issue,” Rivola acknowledged.

Following a farewell parade lap behind the safety car, Rivola commented on the questionable track conditions. “We haven’t yet spoken to Marco since the riders’ stoppage to assess the track. Judging by what we saw, the track conditions didn’t look very good considering the usual high average speeds here,” he said, confirming the weather and surface conditions were suboptimal for racing.

Pressed on whether the cancellation was a blessing or a setback, Rivola remained noncommittal. “I’m here to compete. When I come to Phillip Island, I don’t look at the race from a personal point of view. I brought my family so they could see the last race here. They traveled two or four days for nothing, but that’s how it is.”

Regarding Martín’s injury, Rivola said it is “very difficult” the Spaniard will be fit to race next weekend in Sepang, though he hopes to see him there. “The story between Aprilia and Jorge has been quite unfortunate. The good news is the bone is broken but not displaced. It’s not serious.” Rivola praised Martín’s performance before the crash, calling it “incredible” and believing the rider had a genuine chance to win.

With the Australian GP off the calendar, only four races remain this season, including the uncertain status of the Qatar GP. This situation leaves Bezzecchi’s title chances slim. “We do what we are told. If the organizer says conditions are safe, we race. We are not in a position to say no,” Rivola added. He concluded by emphasizing the uncertainty ahead: “Right now, we believe there are four races left. Whether that’s good or bad for Jorge depends on his physical condition, but that’s not our decision to make.”

Rivola’s remarks underline the complex balance between safety, competition, and championship dynamics as Aprilia faces a challenging end to the season without a clear advantage from the Australian GP cancellation.
