Keith Football Club head to Dumbarton looking to reach Scottish Gas Scottish Cup third round for first time since 2011, sparking memories of Maroons’ greatest season

Could Keith make the third round of the Scottish Cup for the first time in 15 years?

Craig Ewen’s side overcame a banana skin in the first round when they ousted North of Scotland League champions Stonehaven 2-1 at Kynoch Park.

Jordan Lynch and Jordan Cooper got the goals for the home team.

That was Keith’s fifth win in the competition since reaching the third round in 2011-12, when they lost 1-0 at home to Arbroath.

That season, they won 2-0 at St Cuthbert Wanderers thanks to goals by current Inverurie Locos manager Dean Donaldson and Stuart Walker.

Then a Cammy Keith penalty edged out Highland League hosts Wick Academy 1-0 to push the Maroons into round three, where they gave Arbroath a tough challenge but lost narrowly.

One of the Maroons’ previous third round appearances came at Dumbarton in 1976 when they lost 2-0 at the Sons’ former Boghead ground.

Four years later Keith produced their best-ever cup run to round four in their greatest-ever season, after 3-2 wins at Threave Rovers and Hamilton Academical.

Hamilton were First Division leaders at the time but goals from Colin Keir and deadly strike duo Kevin Bremner and Ray O'Hara surged the visitors into a 3-0 lead and they held on for glory.

O’Hara and Bremner were to share 69 goals in that title-winning campaign for a side managed by Jimmy Wilson.

Kynoch Park was packed to the rafters for the visit of Berwick Rangers on February 16, 1980, to see if Keith could emulate Elgin City’s achievement of reaching the quarter-finals in 1967-68.

O’Hara then put Keith in front against Berwick in front of an estimated 5,600 crowd, before the Borderers hit back to snatch victory and reach the last eight, where they lost to Hibs.
