Arizona Cardinals Week 8 defensive, special teams snap counts, observations

In the Arizona Cardinals' 33-30 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys, 20 players participated in at least one of the 74 defensive snaps and 34 players participated in at least one of the 35 special teams snaps.

How was that playing time split up? We have the numbers for everyone below.

The first number after each name is their snap count, and the second is the percentage. Players in bold were starters.

Defensive linemen

  • Inactive: DL Walter Nolen III (injured)

  • Injured reserve: Zach Carter (eligible for return), Kaleb Proctor

Collier was guilty of a “bonehead” (his words) penalty that cost the Cardinals 15 yards and a first down after a third-down stop in the fourth quarter that led to a field goal and 27-17 Dallas lead. He redeemed himself with a deflected pass later in the drive on third-and-11 and then had a sack at the two-minute warning on second-and-10 from the Arizona 20-yard line that also resulted in a field goal that kept it a one-score game. Overall, he also had three tackles (one solo/one for loss) plus two passes defensed and two quarterback hits.

Stills had six tackles (one solo) and a pass defensed, Billings a sack, five tackles (two solo/one for loss) and a QB hit, and Robinson five tackles (three solo/one for loss). Even practice-squad elevation Harrison-Hunte had three solo tackles). Lopez had two tackles (one solo).

Overall, the six active linemen totaled 24 tackles (11 solo/three for loss), two sacks, three passes defensed and there QB hits.

Linebackers

Gibbens led the team with 10 tackles (two solo), while Wilson had eight tackles (three solo/two for loss) and a QB hit.

Defensive backs

  • Did not play: S Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, S Kitan Crawford (both played only on special teams)

  • Inactive: CB Star Thomas V

  • Injured reserve: S Joey Blount, CB Will Johnson (eligible to return after Week 6, but will likely miss the remainder of the season)

Clark had five tackles (two solo/one for loss), Burke had four solo tackles and two passes defensed, while he was also called for pass interference. Melton had two solo tackles and King two assists.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott’s average per attempt was 6.72 and Dallas had pass plays of 27 and 37 yards. Without those, Prescott’s per attempt was 4.85. In the Cardinals three wins, opponents have totaled only five plays of 20 or more yards. In the five losses, there have been 24.

The Cowboys totaled 261 yards (3.6 per play) with 168 net passing and 93 rushing.

Ryland went from goat to hero quickly. He missed an extra point that would have given the Cardinals a 1-point led with six seconds to play in regulation. However, he redeemed himself with 2:53 to play in overtime with a down-the-middle 42-yard game-winner. He is now 18-for-18 this season on field goals of 20-49 yards. In his time with the Cardinals that began in 2024, the PAT miss was his second. Last season he hit all 36 and was perfect on 16 this season until the miss.

Gillikin’s issues continue with a 43.3-yard average on four punts and a 36.0 net. His mostly line-drive punts resulted in three returns for 29 yards, including one for 18 yards.

Kickoff coverage allowed another long return of 45 yards by running back Tyler Goodson.

With Knight injured during the game, Melton was a kickoff returner with Duvernay and had a nice 36-yard run. Duvernay’s long was 24 on four returns.
