Manchester City pair Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma made errors leading to Aston Villa goals

Manchester City were beaten for the first time in the Premier Legaue under Enzo Maresca as Aston Villa picked up a 2-1 victory. Nicolas Jackson scored a goal in each half as the Blues were made to pay for individual errors.

Jackson pounced inside the opening six minutes after Villa took advantage of a Marc Guehi mistake in possession, and an open first half saw both sides had chances. Iliman Ndiaye was one of City's brightest and he crossed early in the second half for Erling Haaland to equalise.

City had the momentum but were caught out by a speedy Villa break and Jackson had Gianluigi Donnarumma flailing for his second. Maresca's side had 20 minutes to get back on level terms again but were unable to find another goal.

Here are the player ratings from the Manchester Evening News.

Donnarumma: Conceded a corner after taking too long for a goal kick and was poor for the second goal. 5

Khusanov: Once again, looked much better in the middle than he did at right-back. 6

Dias: Made some important interceptions and just about kept City together when Villa looked to put them away. 6

Guehi: Another costly error and Maresca didn't give him the second half to try and atone for it. 4

Gvardiol: Nearly scored one minute, and the next saw Mbaye get in behind to set up Villa's second. 6

Anderson: Plenty of positive and progressive passing to get City moving and he stood up to the physical challenge. 7

Fernandez: Looked all over the place in the first half as Villa ripped through the midfield, but was better after the changes. 6

Cherki: A few flashes but he couldn't really get going and the midfield was so open it needed a change. 5

Ndiaye: As seems to be the theme, a really strong first half but tired as the second went on. 7

Doku: Saw plenty of the ball and was able to get into a number of promising positions but that final decision never worked out. 6

Haaland: Took his goal well but didn't have many other opportunities to influence the game. 7

Substitutes

Foden (for Cherki, 46) Didn't get the chance for another goal but made a solid contribution. 6

Lewis (for Guehi, 46) Linked well with Ndiaye and then McAidoo. 6

McAidoo (for Ndiaye, 69) Lots of running at the Villa defence. 6

Not used: Rulli, Ait-Nouri, Reis, O'Reilly, Bouaddi, Kovacic
