Arshdeep Singh Scripts T20I Record Despite India's 87-Run Defeat To New Zealand

Arshdeep Singh became the first Indian to take 150 T20I wickets and set a calendar-year record with 40 wickets in 2026, despite India's 87-run defeat to New Zealand in the fourth T20I at Eden Park, Auckland.

Arshdeep Singh Scripts T20I Record Despite India's 87-Run Defeat To New Zealand

Arshdeep Singh gave India a significant reason to celebrate despite their crushing 87-run defeat to New Zealand in the fourth T20I at Eden Park, Auckland, on October 30. The left-arm pacer reached the landmark of 150 T20I wickets, becoming the first Indian bowler to achieve the milestone. He also set a new record for the most T20I wickets taken by a player from a Full Member nation in a calendar year.

Arshdeep entered the match needing one wicket to reach the 150-wicket mark. He achieved the feat by dismissing New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, who scored five runs, during India's chase. The milestone came in his 103rd T20I appearance, further strengthening his position among India's most successful bowlers in the shortest international format.

Arshdeep Singh Breaks Multiple T20I Records

The 27-year-old's achievement extended beyond reaching 150 wickets. With his dismissal of Santner, Arshdeep also took his 40th T20I wicket in 2026, surpassing Ireland's Josh Little, who claimed 39 wickets in 2022.

This made Arshdeep the highest wicket-taker in a calendar year among players representing Full Member nations in men's T20I cricket. His consistent performances throughout the year have made him an important part of India's bowling attack.

Arshdeep also reached the 150-wicket milestone faster than several established names in international cricket. He completed the achievement in 1,577 days from his T20I debut, comfortably beating the previous benchmark of 2,325 days set by Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga. He also became the fastest fast bowler to reach 150 T20I wickets in terms of deliveries bowled, accomplishing the feat in 2,143 balls.

New Zealand Batters Dominate India in Auckland

While Arshdeep made history, India endured a difficult evening against an aggressive New Zealand batting lineup. Glenn Phillips produced a sensational innings of 107 runs from just 49 deliveries, while Michael Bracewell contributed 65 off 25 balls to power the hosts to 259/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Arshdeep finished as India's most economical bowler, returning figures of 1/38 from his four overs. However, the rest of the bowling attack struggled to contain the New Zealand batters, who repeatedly found the boundary.

Chasing 260, India suffered an early setback after losing Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan in the opening over. The early wickets put the visitors under immediate pressure, and they never managed to recover sufficiently to challenge New Zealand's imposing total. India eventually finished at 172/9, handing the hosts an 87-run victory.

India Still Lead the Five-Match T20I Series

Despite the defeat, India retained a 3-1 lead in the five-match T20I series, having won the opening three encounters. New Zealand's victory provided some momentum ahead of the final match.

Arshdeep's record-breaking performance remained one of the few positives from the fourth T20I. Becoming the first Indian to take 150 T20I wickets, while setting a new calendar-year record, underlined his growing importance to the national side.
