Cowboys' run game resurrected; defense shows signs of life in Week 7 win

The Cowboys came away from their annual trip to Philadelphia with a 38-21 win. And just maybe a new glimmer of hope for saving their season.

The offense regained some of the mojo that had been missing from the team's past two losses, with a renewed emphasis on the ground game leading the way. Running back Javonte Williams had a career night and scored the game-sealing touchdown with just over two minutes to play.

And while the Dallas defense was shaky at times, especially early, they tightened up just enough in the second half to help the team improve its record to 3-4 with a couple more very winnable games on deck.

1st half: Self-inflicted wounds keep it close

After back-to-back missed games with a bad hamstring, Saquon Barkley returned for Philadelphia, on a mission to carry the Eagles on his back. But after coming up gimpy at the end of his first run of 29 yards, head coach Nick Sirianni had no choice but to use him sparingly the rest of the night. That certainly worked to the Cowboys' advantage.

The two teams traded scoring drives for the first two possessions of the contest, but the Cowboys did more damage to themselves in the first half than anything the Eagles had drawn up. Seven penalties before halftime (all on defense or special teams) showcased the team's lack of discipline; four of those flags awarded Philly a fresh set of downs, and one of them wiped out a 91-yard kick return for touchdown by Tyler Goodson.

Offensively, Brian Schottenheimer leaned more heavily on the run than in weeks past; Williams and Goodson posted more rushing yards in their first two drives than in the entirety of the team's Week 5 and 6 games. That was a good call, as quarterback Dak Prescott missed connections with several of his receivers, including what should have been a walk-in touchdown bomb to CeeDee Lamb and was instead just a 30-yard pickup... after Lamb adjusted nicely to the underthrown ball.

Prescott's 21-yard touchdown pass to George Pickens, though, was a thing of beauty, with Pickens showing off not only his spectacular hands but also remarkable body control to get both feet down in bounds. It was easily the Cowboys' highlight of the year so far.

With three drives of over 75 yards before halftime, Prescott & Co. looked to be mostly back on track and carried a 20-14 lead into the break.

2nd half: Signs of life on both sides of ball

The third quarter saw Philadelphia take the kickoff and keep the ball for over nine minutes, a theme that's become tiresome this year for Cowboys fans (not to mention the Dallas defense). They key moment? A 4th-and-1 that saw wide receiver Makai Lemon rip off 15 yards on a short pass from Tanner McKee. The 17-play drive ended in the end zone and put the Eagles back in front with a 21-20 lead.

Dallas answered with a nine-play drive of their own, punctuated with a Lamb touchdown catch and a Prescott run for a two-point conversion, and it looked like the shootout might continue for the remainder of the game.

And then the Cowboys defense started to show flashes of what's been promised since training camp. Donovan Ezeiruaku's sack on the Eagles' next possession helped kill that drive, and DeMarvion Overshown's ultra-athletic interception on the following drive served as a back-breaker. (It was just the Cowboys' second pick of the 2026 season.) Another sack on the Eagles' next possession, this one by Quinnen Williams with under 5:00 to play, helped lead to a turnover on downs and all but sealed Philly's fate.

Prescott was good, but thankfully didn't have to be great on the night, completing 15 balls on just 27 attempts, half the number of throws he tried versus Green Bay in Week 6. Lamb had trouble finding the handle, catching just five of his 12 targets (though he did amass 74 yards and score twice). Ryan Flournoy had a nice outing, catching all four of this throws for 70 yards.

But the offensive star of the game was Williams, who posted his first 100-yard rushing performance in over a year, set a new career-high with 155 yards, and ended the game tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns, with eight.

Key takeaways from win

Overall, the offense was effective: Dallas's most points since Week 7 of last year, a season-high 416 yards, and 9-of-14 on 3rd- and 4th-down conversions. There were moments when Schottenheimer's play-calling seemed to get too cute (like the bewildering handoff to fullback Hunter Luepke on 3rd-and-8), but the offensive line didn't allow a single negative play, so even the occasional head-scratchers didn't really cost the Cowboys. The 38 points were the most scored on Vic Fangio's defense so far this season.

On defense, the unit did enough to win. Of course, it must be pointed out that it came against a battered 2-4 Eagles squad who played its backup quarterback, two wide receivers off the bench, and several replacements along the O-line. And Dallas gave up over 20 points for a 14th straight game, the longest such streak in franchise history. The heat isn't off Parker by any stretch, but there may be signs of life for the first time in a long time.
