The FIA have confirmed a huge grid penalty for Ferrari star Lewis Hamilton, with several of his rivals also hit ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The FIA initially confirmed a 10-place grid drop for Hamilton during Saturday's FP3 session, with Ferrari having fitted a new internal combustion engine (ICE) to his power unit ahead of hitting the track on Saturday.
However, during FP3, the seven-time world champion then experienced further issues, forced to park his Ferrari in the garage with 26 minutes to go after complaining of smoke in the cockpit.
"It stinks of burnt oil! Just that smell of burning oil," Sky Sports F1's Ted Kravitz reported from the pit lane.
Unfortunately for Hamilton, it appears that the issue he experienced in FP3 was power unit related, with Ferrari unable to fix the problem despite doing their best to do so.
As a result, the team has now confirmed Hamilton has taken an entirely new power unit ahead of qualifying this afternoon, and he will therefore start tomorrow's race from the back of the grid.
"Following today’s FP3 session, the power unit fitted to car #44 was removed for further checks. After completing our analysis, we have decided to replace the entire power unit. Lewis Hamilton will take part in qualifying but will have to start tomorrow’s race from the back of the grid," Ferrari confirmed.
Hamilton is not the only driver taking power unit penalties in Sao Paulo, with several other drivers also affected.
Red Bull star Max Verstappen will also start Sunday's grand prix from the back of the grid after several changes to his power unit saw him hit with a 30-place grid penalty, while Hamilton's Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc has also been hit with a 10-place grid drop after changing his ICE.
Elsewhere, a change of ICE for George Russell ahead of Friday's action saw him hit with a five-place grid penalty, with the Mercedes star taking his sixth ICE of the season this weekend. Russell's penalty is less than others taking a new ICE in Sao Paulo as he already exceeded the limit of four ICEs for the season at the Singapore Grand Prix, where he was hit with the same 10-place grid drop.
At the time of writing, the only other penalty to mention is for Sergio Perez, also set to start at the back of the grid with Hamilton and Verstappen after a 30-place grid penalty for changes to his Cadillac power unit.
