Victory for Cardiff would have seen them finish above Sheffield Steelers in their Challenge Cup group

Sheffield Steelers have finished top of their Challenge Cup group after Cardiff Devils were denied the result they needed in Manchester.

Cardiff went into their final group game knowing that victory, either in regulation or overtime, would have taken them above Sheffield and secured first place.

For much of the night, that looked likely.

The Devils led 2-0 and later 3-1, but Manchester Storm produced a dramatic comeback to level the game before going on to claim victory in the shootout.

The result leaves Sheffield top of the group and gives Aaron Fox’s side an important advantage heading into the semi-finals.

As group winners, the Steelers will have the benefit of hosting the second leg of their two-game semi-final tie at the Utilita Arena.

That could prove significant, with Sheffield now able to return home for the decisive second leg.

Their semi-final opponents have not yet been officially confirmed.

Cardiff remain the most likely side to face the Steelers, but the final outcome will not be known until the elimination game between Guildford Flames and Fife Flyers has been completed.

The Steelers had already secured their place in the last four following their 5-2 victory over Manchester Storm earlier in the week.

Sunday’s result in Manchester has now ensured they progress as group winners.

For Fox and his players, it is another important step in a competition they have targeted strongly from the start of the season.

The focus will now turn to the semi-finals, with Sheffield knowing they will have the advantage of finishing the tie in front of their home support.
