The Oklahoma Sooners have a big game on Saturday against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Sooners are coming off their best offensive performance and hope to continue it.
Quarterback John Mateer threw for a season-high 283 yards and threw two touchdowns. This followed a season-high 270-yard outing the week before against the Kentucky Wildcats. The hope is he can continue his hot stretch against a South Carolina defense that ranks No. 91 in pass defense and allows 222.7 yards per game through the air.
Former Oklahoma All-American Gabe Ikard thinks the gunslinger should have success against the Gamecocks.
"I think this is a game where we can do damage in the air," Ikard said on 'The Oklahoma Breakdown with Ikard and Lehman.' "That may make some people uncomfortable, but I'm just going to choose to believe that the John Mateer that showed up in Starkville is going to show up on Saturday afternoon."
Mateer's recent performances have given Oklahoma reason to believe its passing game is finding its rhythm. Another strong outing against South Carolina would help build momentum and give the offense a more balanced attack moving forward. The Gamecocks' struggles defending the pass could create opportunities for Mateer and his receivers, particularly if the Sooners can establish the run and keep the defense from focusing entirely on the passing game.
Ultimately, Oklahoma needs to turn that potential into points. The Sooners have moved the ball more effectively in recent weeks, but finishing drives remains a priority. If Mateer can carry his recent form into Saturday and capitalize on the opportunities South Carolina presents, Oklahoma could take another meaningful step toward becoming the offense it expected to be this season.
