Three Bold Predictions for Oregon Ducks vs. Illinois Fighting Illini

The Oregon Ducks' offensive woes set stage for three surprising predictions against Illinois.

Oregon looks to win consecutive games for just the second time this season when the Ducks (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) square off against the Illinois Fighting Illini (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) on Saturday in Champaign.

Coach Dan Lanning’s squad is 15-2 away from Eugene since 2023, with its .882 winning percentage ranking first nationally during that time frame. Illinois, however, isn’t a pushover at home under coach Bret Bielema, going 14-4 since 2024.

Quarterback Dylan Raiola is expected to start in place of injured quarterback Dante Moore as Oregon makes its third-ever trip to Gies Memorial Stadium and first since knocking off the Illini 13-7 in 1993.

Bielema turns to true freshman Michael Clayton II, who makes his first career start after guiding Illinois to a 38-37 overtime win at Michigan State in relief of injured quarterback Katin Houser.

Here are three bold predictions as Oregon goes for its 11th conference road win in 11 tries since joining the Big Ten in 2024.

Oregon Holds Onto the Ball

Oregon is accustomed to putting points on the scoreboard under Lanning. Since taking over in 2022, the Ducks lead the nation with an average of 38.5 points per game and an FBS-best 48 games of 30-plus points, two games more than Georgia.

That potent offense, however, has been wildly inconsistent through the first half of the season under first-year offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer.

According to FOX Sports college football analyst Chris Fallica, Oregon’s 24.0 yards per drive against Power Four opponents is second-worst in the country, ahead of only Stanford (23.7).

Only Oklahoma (20.0 percent) has a higher percentage of drives ending in a turnover than the Ducks (18.5 percent). Of Oregon’s 10 turnovers in four Power Four contests, seven of them came in its 17-15 loss to No. 9 UCLA.

The Illini excel at capitalizing on turnovers. Bielema’s squad is 18-1 since 2024 when forcing at least one turnover. That lone defeat, though, came nearly two years to the day on Oct. 26, 2024, in Eugene, when the Ducks upended Illinois 38-9.

Prediction: Raiola builds on his fourth quarter against Nebraska and finally provides the stability that the Oregon offense desperately needs. The Ducks take it directly to one of the Illini’s strengths and commit zero turnovers.

Oregon Defense Stonewalls Collin Dixon

Illinois boasts one of the most prolific pass-catchers in college football in wide receiver Collin Dixon. The senior is third in the nation with nine touchdowns to go along with 608 yards on 47 catches.

Oregon has been locking up teams on defense, allowing opponents to convert just 25.9 percent of their third downs, third-best in the FBS.

In their last two games, the Ducks have kept two dangerous pass-catchers out of the end zone in wide receivers Semaj Morgan (five catches for 55 receiving yards) of UCLA and Jacory Barney Jr. (two catches for 37 yards).

Prediction: Oregon’s defensive front doesn’t allow Clayton II to settle in and replicate the pre-bye week magic he produced against Michigan State in place of the injured Houser.

Dixon has a productive day but fails to reach the end zone, denying him an opportunity to tie Illinois’ single-season record of 10 touchdown receptions.

Oregon Ducks Cover the Spread

Oregon covers the spread against Illinois. While that doesn’t necessarily sound “bold” on the surface, it’s been a rare occurrence this season.

The Ducks have won four of their six games, but they’re just 2-4 against the spread, including failing to cover recently against UCLA and Nebraska. Illinois is also 2-4 against the spread this season.

BetMGM and DraftKings each designate Oregon as 10-point favorites with an over/under of 49.5. Whereas FanDuel lists the Ducks at 9.5 points with the same over/under.

Prediction: Something must give when Oregon’s elite road success runs into Illinois’ home dominance. Oregon snaps its two-game slide against the spread, but its 24-10 victory falls well short of the 49.5-point over/under.
