"The FPF are not losing their product, but it probably loses the greatest individual asset ever tied to that product," explained the director of the IPAM (Portuguese Institute of Marketing Management) in Porto, assessing the impact on the Portuguese Football Federation.
Sa described the sheer influence of the Cristiano Ronaldo brand on the Selecao's global reach as "extraordinary and difficult for any other Portuguese player to replicate in the short term".
The marketing expert highlighted an IPAM study from 2025 that valued the CR7 brand at €850 million—a staggering 325% increase on 2020—while awarding him an 88 out of 100 on its sports reputation index, driven by top marks in social media engagement and revenue generation.
As Sa pointed out, Ronaldo had already eclipsed one billion followers across his various digital channels, transforming the veteran forward into "a global communication platform in his own right".
"Portugal do not merely lose an extraordinary player. They also lose one of the biggest international amplifiers of the Portugal brand from the last two decades," he maintained.
The commercial fallout, however, will differ significantly across revenue streams. On the sponsorship front, Sa does not expect existing contracts to suffer structurally from his international exit, given that corporate partners buy into the national team and the federation rather than an individual player's image rights.
Portugal's guaranteed pedigree at major tournaments alongside a fresh crop of world-class talent should also insulate their commercial appeal, Sa argued.
"There will be an impact, but it would be premature to claim there will be a significant drop in revenue for the federation without data to prove it," he cautioned.
Instead, Sa identified merchandising and overseas market demand as the most exposed sectors, noting that the iconic number 7 shirt associated with Cristiano became a worldwide commercial phenomenon that cannot simply be replaced overnight.
Back home in Portugal, he anticipates a limited impact on matchday ticketing, where supporters' loyalty to the national side comfortably transcends any individual star. In select international markets, however, Ronaldo's presence alone previously unlocked lucrative standalone demand.
To navigate this transitional period, Sa advised the federation against searching for "the next Ronaldo", urging them to craft a fresh narrative built around an exceptional generation, collective ambition, and player development.
A brand of Ronaldo's scale, Sa stressed, is the rare culmination of elite longevity, trophies, relentless performance, charisma, and unmatched international reach cultivated over more than twenty years.
Even in international retirement, the forward will continue to bolster the country's profile as "an extraordinary informal ambassador for Portugal and Portuguese football".
"The federation's biggest challenge is not replacing Cristiano Ronaldo. It is ensuring that the extraordinary power of an individual brand now transforms into a legacy for the collective brand," Sa affirmed.
Following over two decades of mutual growth, both entities now face a defining chapter: "CR7 must prove that his brand can keep expanding without the national team, while the national team must demonstrate they can sustain their commercial power without relying on CR7."
