Mohammed Shami Confirms IPL and White-Ball Future After Test Retirement

While announcing his retirement, Mohammed Shami clarified that he was not stepping away from cricket altogether. The veteran pacer confirmed his availability for white-ball cricket, including the IPL and domestic limited-overs competitions.

Shami has represented Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy despite remaining out of India's plans.

The pacer is also part of Bengal's 19-member squad for the 2026-27 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He has taken 14 wickets in three matches in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season after claiming seven wickets in three matches for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy.

Shami currently represents Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL after moving from Sunrisers Hyderabad in a trade worth ₹10 crore ahead of the 2026 season. He has played 133 matches in the tournament, taking 145 wickets at an average of 29.02 and an economy rate of 8.67.

The former Gujarat Titans pacer won the Purple Cap in 2023 after taking 28 wickets in 17 matches. He also claimed 20 wickets in 16 games during GT's title-winning campaign in 2022.

I Am Leaving The White Jersey, But Never The Memories - Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami shared an emotional message while announcing his decision, thanking everyone who supported him throughout his Test career. He reflected on the challenges, injuries and achievements that shaped his journey in the longest format.

"I am leaving the white jersey, but never the memories connected to it. When I first wore India's Test jersey, I had only one dream: to do something for my country. After that, every wicket, every struggle, every injury and every comeback taught me something," Shami wrote.

"Test cricket is not just a format for me, it is a very special part of my life. Today, I am deciding to retire from Test cricket with a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories," he added.

Shami made his Test debut on November 6, 2013, against the West Indies in Kolkata and picked up nine wickets in the match. He finished his career with 229 wickets at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls.

Mohammed Shami Finishes As Fifth Indian Pacer With 200-Plus Test Wickets

Known for his upright seam position and ability to generate movement with the new and old ball, Mohammed Shami remained an important part of India's pace attack for nearly a decade. He became the fifth Indian fast bowler to cross the 200-wicket mark in Test cricket.

The Bengal pacer claimed 131 wickets in 35 Tests across South Africa, England and the West Indies, averaging under 25 in those countries. Some of his finest performances came in South Africa, where he took 5/28 in the second innings of the Johannesburg Test in 2018 to help India secure a victory.

On India's next tour of South Africa, Shami picked up eight wickets in the first Test at Centurion. His career-best Test figures of 6/56 came against Australia in Perth in 2018.

He also made valuable contributions with the bat, including an unbeaten 56 against England at Lord's in 2021. His innings helped India set up a memorable victory at the venue.

Shami last represented India across formats in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which the team won under former India captain Rohit Sharma. He took 206 wickets in 108 ODIs and 27 wickets in 25 T20Is.
