Iraola urges Liverpool to react positively to consecutive losses
Iraola urges Liverpool to react positively to consecutive losses

Andoni Iraola has called on Liverpool to respond to their back-to-back defeats when they travel to struggling Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

This time last week, Liverpool were on a five-game unbeaten streak, but that stretch ended with a 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the top-flight on Sunday.

It was then followed up with a 3-2 defeat away to Fenerbahce in the Champions League, with Liverpool twice giving up a lead to end their winning start in that competition.

With the international break now approaching, Iraola wants to see a quick response from his team to get back on track.

"I think that is the challenge, especially in a club like Liverpool," he said.

"One week ago, in this news conference [the talk was], we were on a run, everything was in a good place, and we were in a better mood.

"Now, after two defeats, it changes, and it has to be like this in clubs like ours. Now we have to react after two defeats. We need a win against Crystal Palace away.

"We have been in similar situations against Bournemouth before the international break and after the Brentford game. So, we have to go [to Palace], do a good job and win the game."

Pierre Sage, meanwhile, is under vast pressure, with Palace sitting at the other end of the table in 18th, having lost each of their last three Premier League matches without scoring.

In all competitions, they have won just one of their last seven games (D2 L4), and they host Liverpool without the suspended Jean-Philippe Mateta after his red card in the 2-0 loss to Tottenham.

"As you know, JP was injured at the beginning of the season," Sage said. "There was the opportunity for Jorgen Strand Larsen and Eddie Nketiah to play.

"We have big confidence in the other players. They've shown they are able to play and they are able to compete.

"We need them in the play; we need them to press, we need them to score, to finalise the offensive play. We have some solutions."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Crystal Palace – Daichi Kamada

Against Tottenham last weekend, Palace managed just two shots overall and only one on target, which came from Daichi Kamada.

The Japan international also salvaged the Eagles a late 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim in the Europa League, with that strike his fourth goal in his last 12 games for Palace, one more than he scored in his first 92 appearances for them.

Liverpool – Alexander Isak

Only Erling Haaland (nine) has scored more Premier League goals than Alexander Isak (six) this season.

He has outperformed his 4.4 expected goals (xG) and tops the charts among Liverpool players for shots (22) and shots on target (nine) in the Premier League, as well as averaging a goal every 110.2 minutes.

MATCH PREDICTION: LIVERPOOL WIN

Palace ended a 10-game winless home Premier League run against Liverpool last season, winning 2-1 at Selhurst Park. They last recorded consecutive home league victories against the Reds in 1990-91 and 1991-92.

Liverpool have won three of their last eight league matches against Palace (D3 L2), having won 10 in a row beforehand. They have netted just nine goals in these eight games, having scored 27 in their previous eight.

However, given Palace's recent struggles, Liverpool are the favourites here. And the Reds have won each of their last three top-flight away games, last winning more consecutively between August and October 2024 (four).

Only Nottingham Forest (83%) have won a higher share of their points away from home than Liverpool (67% – 10/15) in the Premier League this season. Only Arsenal (12) have won more points on the road overall than the Reds this term (10).

Palace, meanwhile, have lost 5-0 against Brighton, 2-0 against Newcastle United and 2-0 against Spurs in their last three Premier League games. They last lost more consecutively without scoring between May and September 2017 (eight).
