India won the first T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22, 2026, by 4 wickets with 2 balls remaining. New Zealand posted 225 for 4 in their 20 overs, and India chased down the target, scoring 230 for 6 in 19.4 overs. The victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Aakash Chopra, the former India cricketer and cricket analyst, has examined India's performance in the opening match and identified specific adjustments for the second T20I. Chopra emphasised that India's batting unit faced considerable pressure from New Zealand's spin bowling, with both Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner using their overs effectively to restrict India's scoring.
Chopra stressed the importance of India countering New Zealand's spin threat by including a spinner in their own playing eleven for the upcoming fixture.
"Play a spinner, whether you play Varun or Kuldeep. Play whoever you like, but play one of them for sure because Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner strangled us. They choked us. Eight overs of spin - Santner's last over became extremely expensive courtesy of Naman Dhir, but both bowled very well otherwise,"Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
The ground conditions and match circumstances support Chopra's reasoning for including a spinner. He noted that Hagley Oval is a large venue and India will play back-to-back games, which means the pitch is likely to remain consistent across both matches. This factor will influence how the ball behaves during play.
"This is a big ground, and it's back-to-back games, which means in all likelihood, the 22-yard pitch will also remain the same. So the ball will get stuck a little. When spinners were getting help in the previous game, that too the New Zealand spinners, and that too in the second innings, when there would have been a slight problem of dew, it's only fair that you play one of the two spinners," Chopra observed.
Chopra has recommended a change in India's batting lineup based on fitness concerns. He stated that Ishan Kishan is not fit to play in the second match, which necessitates a replacement in the squad.
"Ishan Kishan is not fit. That means there is one change for sure. That is Vaibhav Suryavanshi. You will have to bring him back into the team. The team might still think otherwise. They might play Shivam Dube," Chopra said.
Regarding the batting position for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Chopra has offered specific guidance on how the young player should be positioned in the order. He emphasised the importance of placing him in a position where he feels comfortable and protected.
"However, I feel if a No. 3 guy goes, obviously, Vaibhav should come. Don't bat him at No. 3. Make him open. He is a 15-year-old kid. Protect him where you can. Make him bat at the number he is very comfortable at," Chopra added.
