A rough few weeks for NFL officials continued on Sunday after a referee announced the wrong decision on a video review, sending players into a celebration, only to be brought down to earth seconds later.
Week 6 brought the Dallas Cowboys to Lambeau Field for a Sunday Night Football matchup with the Green Bay Packers, the nightcap of a wild Sunday across the NFL that included officials being slammed for "soft" penalties and a star being tossed for a disgusting act. With the action in Wisconsin came another dose of officiating controversy.
Cowboys defensive back Daron Bland appeared to come away with an interception of Jordan Love late in the second half, going out of bounds after coming up with the ball, but was ruled not to have control before stepping over the line.
The play was reviewed, with replays showing the Cowboys defender bobbling the ball slightly and unable to get both feet in bounds with possession. The official, however, announced the play had been changed to an interception, sending Bland and his teammates into a celebratory frenzy.
Their jubilance was short-lived, however, as the official came back on the microphone seconds later to correct their error, leaving Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer livid with the crew.
The incident left the officials with egg on their faces, and fans with more ammo for their never-ending assault on the NFL's men in stripes.
"Refs called it incomplete called it an interception then called it incomplete again f------ nfl is a joke," one social media user wrote in response to the sequence.
"Refs during this Cowboys-Packers game. It's an incomplete pass. 2 seconds later: It's an interception. 3 seconds later: It's an incomplete pass. Officiating has been a mess lately," another wrote.
