British players progress to second round of the Lexus Wrexham Open

Jodie Burrage and Alicia Dudeney made it a winning double on a successful day for British players as the first round matches in the Lexus Wrexham Open were completed.

They joined fellow Brit Hannah Kugman, victorious the previous day, in tomorrow’s second round of the World Tennis Tour W100 event at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre by enjoying impressive wins.

Burrage, a regular member of Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup team, was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over world No.180 Eva Vedder from the Netherlands in the day’s opening match in the Carden Park Arena.

“I’m really happy to get through,” said Burrage, who has been ranked as high as 85 in the world. “She’s a really tough player and has won a lot of tournaments this year. I think she’s at a career-high, so happy that I could get some good tennis out on court. She put up a good fight in that second set. I’m glad I managed to hold onto it and close it out when I could.

“She upped her game, which you expect because she’s been playing some really good stuff, but I just managed to take my time and serve my way out of trouble and then played a great game at 5-5 to break her.”

Enjoying her time in Wrexham, Burrage, who will play fourth seed Noma Noha Akugue from Germany in tomorrow’s second round, added: “The crowd was really, really good. The One Point Grand that we played the other night got a lot of people in as well, so it’s been really fun, and looking to stay here a few more days.”

Dudeney, the British No.7, also produced a strong performance to book her place in round two with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Germany’s Tessa Johanna Brockmann.

“It was really good,” said Dudeney, who will next face seventh seed Susan Bandecchi from Switzerland tomorrow. “I thought I played really well out there. I think it was a great first match.”

Dudeney is enjoying an excellent year and travelled to Wrexham after winning her sixth World Tennis Tour title of 2026 last week, a W35 event in Birmingham, as she looks to carry the momentum into this week in North Wales.

The current world No. 232 added: “Yes, hopefully carry last week into this week and keep trying to play the right way, playing good tennis, and hopefully the results will follow.”

Dudeney is impressed with the level of this week’s tournament with two current top 100 players joined by a number of players from the world’s top 200 in the Lexus Wrexham Open main draw.

“It’s a really strong line up this year,” she said. “There’s so many great players here, but I think it’s such a great thing. Everyone puts so much effort into this tournament and it’s such a great tournament to be a part of. I think also having a strong field gives the tournament the recognition it deserves as well.”

Elsewhere, second seed Alina Charaeva, currently ranked 97 in the world, was knocked out in the first round by Czech player Anna Siskova. Armenia’s Charaeva hit the headlines earlier this month by beating world number one Elena Rybakina in the China Open, but she was unable to build on taking the first set as Siskova, who will play British No.10 Hannah Klugman in round two tomorrow, hit back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

There were also first round wins today for Bandecchi, Noha Akugue, Lucie Havlickova, Elsa Jacquemot, Viktoria Morvayova and Dalayna Hewitt, who beat eighth seed Ayla Aksu from Turkey in straight sets.

Tomorrow’s second round matches start at 10am, with entry to watch the action from court side stands £19 for adults and £14 for under-16s, which includes a 44-page tournament programme.
