Golf is one of the hardest sports to perfect on the planet, if not the hardest.

In fact, it’s fair to say that nobody has ever actually perfected the game, although Scottie Scheffler has come closer than most to doing so.

Scheffler’s incredible success in the game is obviously down to his incredible talent and work ethic, but none of his achievements would have been possible without Randy Smith by his side.

Smith operates out of the world number one’s home course – Royal Oaks in Dallas, Texas.

He has taught numerous other PGA Tour players aside from Scheffler, including the likes of Gary Woodland and Justin Leonard.

Now Smith has offered some great advice to help amateur golfers improve their play in windy conditions.

Scottie Scheffler’s coach has three tips to help amateurs play better in the wind

Randy Smith is one of the most knowledgeable golf coaches around.

The advice he shared last year about how to improve your play in windy conditions was pure gold.

Coming from Dallas, Texas, Smith obviously knows all about wind on the golf course!

“This is the most common way people hit a low shot,” Smith began.

“The swing is too steep and that puts too much backspin on the ball, which is what makes a shot rise. It can shoot up into the wind.

“You need a slightly wider stance to promote a shallow swing and move the ball a little back in stance to de-loft the club. Finally, you need to grip down on the club.“

So the key to hitting low shots is shallowing out the backswing and downswing.

Another vital change you must make when playing in the wind is actually taking power off your shots. The faster you swing, the more spin you will impart on your golf ball.

And that is definitely not what we want. The smoother you swing, the lower your ball flight will be. It also helps to only play with three-quarter swings.

Sometimes the wind is too strong to fight, so you simply have to play with it, rather than attempt to work your ball against it.

Playing in windy conditions is always an incredibly difficult thing to do, so you need to take it easy on yourself.

Don’t expect miracles, but at the same time, do everything in your power to limit your mistakes. And ensuring that you don’t have a steep angle of attack into the back of your ball will certainly help you control your flight better.
