The Spanish Football Federation have postponed 24 Copa del Rey games in the aftermath of a devastating train crash in the country.

At least 64 people have died and countless more left with injuries after a high-speed train collided with the back of another in the Toledo region of Spain on Wednesday morning.

A massive rescue effort is now underway to retrieve survivors and treat the wounded. And it has now been confirmed that all of the Spanish cup games set to take place on Wednesday have now been called off.

A statement read: "As a sign of respect and solidarity with all the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred early this Wednesday morning in the province of Toledo, the RFEF has suspended all 24 matches of the first round of the Spanish Championship-Copa del Rey originally scheduled for this afternoon and evening, as well as all other matches in competitions organised by the RFEF.

"The RFEF will announce the revised tournament schedule and the final times for the postponed matches in the coming days.

"The great Spanish football family remains united in grief at the tragedy, offering its support to the authorities to help the victims of this devastating accident."

In all, there were 24 fixtures concluded on Wednesday, with top-flight sides such as Real Betis, Valencia and Celta Vigo all among those previously set to be in action.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are set to enter the competition in December but all have released statements on Wednesday in the aftermath of the crash.

So far, there has been no word on if the rest of the Spanish Cup games across the week will be affected, while this weekend’s La Liga fixtures are currently set to go ahead as planned.

Meanwhile, president of the Andalusian Regional Government, Juanma Moreno, has confirmed three days of official mourning across Andalusia.

In a post on Twitter, he said: "We declare three days of official mourning in Andalusia, from 14:00 today until 14:00 next Saturday, October 31. We are devastated. All of Andalusia stands with the victims of this new railway accident."
