Penn State's hockey program cannot seem to escape overtime drama lately. The Nittany Lions lost in an overtime game at home on Friday night against Notre Dame, falling 5-4 after giving up three consecutive goals to the Fighting Irish.
Penn State held a 4-2 advantage midway through the second period following a shorthanded goal by freshman Shea Busch, the second of his first two career goals on the night. Busch's first goal gave Penn State a 3- 2 lead. 3-2 lead in the second period. But Notre Dame picked up a goal before the second intermission and then tied the game up in the third period with 8:55 to play in the third period.
Evan Werner scored the game-winning goal for Notre Dame at 3:14 in overtime when he got the puck by the blocker of Penn State goaltender Ryder Fetterolf. Fetterolf falls to 1-3-0 this season despite making 37 saves in the game. Notre Dame won the game despite being shorthanded with three players serving suspensions from fighting incidents in a game against Wisconsin last weekend that resulted in automatic suspensions and an additional suspension from the Big Ten offices. The Irish will have a deeper roster in the second game of the weekend series when those players are eligible to return to the ice.
This was Penn State's fourth straight game decided in overtime. Will they need extra time once again in the next game? Penn State and Notre Dame will be back in action on Saturday night in the Pegula Ice Arena to wrap up this weekend series.
