Norwich City Women beat Peterborough 4-0 in cup clash

Norwich City Women’s late first-half flourish inspired them to victory in the first round of the WNL Cup, their second clash with Peterborough inside three days.

Issy Moore’s backheel at the end of an opening period lacking in quality opened the floodgates for Poppy Groves and Elliana Martin to find the net in five unbelievable minutes.

Lara Densley rounded off a tidy cup performance in the closing stages that denied Posh revenge after Wednesday’s league draw.

Poppy Irvine made a pair of good saves to keep Posh at bay before Holly Kennard turned on the after-burner down the left. Her low drive across goal was neatly tucked away by Moore’s ingenious flick rolling in on 42 minutes.

Martin then saw her effort saved at point blank on the end of Freya Symonds’ cutback, but Groves was on hand to fire home at the second opportunity.

The forward wasn’t to be denied on her first full start, closing down goalkeeper Nieve Correy and sending her kick cannoning back off her foot and in for number three.

City’s fourth through Niyah Dunbar was ruled out for offside with 20 minutes left before fellow substitute Densley coolly found the top right corner.

Norwich City: Irvine, Riglar (Wilson 77), King, Williams, Daviss, Martin (Hailes 56), Kennard (Densley 77), Groves, Wallace (Szczech 62), Symonds, Moore (Dunbar 62)

Peterborough: Correy, Jenkins, Pitt, Osker, Steggles (Clarke 73), Wilshaw, Reynolds, Mears (Barlett 73), Hines (Driscoll 46), Rai (May 64), Ganado (Perkins 64)
