Brian Flores has the Minnesota Vikings' defense operating at an elite level in his fourth season as defensive coordinator. They rank first in EPA/play allowed and defensive DVOA, suffocating offenses with an absurd 67% blitz rate.
Former Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton, a Pro Football Hall of Fame member, saw the famed "Purple People Eaters" defenses of the '60s and '70s harass opponents. Tarkenton believes Flores deserves as much credit for the 2026 unit's success as anyone because of how much they've had to overcome some of the team's offensive struggles.
"Our defensive coach is the best defensive coach in football," Tarkenton said on the Talk North Podcast with legendary Minnesota sportscaster Mark Rosen. "What he's done with that defense is unbelievable. Here we are, I think 5-0, won everything, and our offense hasn't scored. We have moved around quarterbacks, our offense hasn't put many points on the board, but we're undefeated because our defense is just playing lights out and he blitzes more than anybody else."
Tarkenton added that Flores is "the best defensive coordinator of this generation." If the Vikings want to make a postseason run, they will likely need the offense to continue improving, as they were heading into last week's bye.
Until then, Minnesota can compete with everyone as long as its defense keeps dominating. We'll see how Flores handles high-octane offenses like the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers over the next month.
