The San Francisco 49ers are no longer undefeated in 2026, but that doesn't mean they dropped too far in many experts' power rankings.
The 49ers remained No. 1 in several of the outlets we canvassed heading into Week 8 despite a shocking loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Some attributed the loss to a bevy of injuries that were out of the team's control, while others still see San Francisco as the top dog in the NFL.
However, the 49ers did fall for others. While San Francisco stayed within the top five, they dropped anywhere within that top-2-to-5 range heading into their bye week.
Here's the full power rankings roundup for Week 8.
Huh, you say? These guys just lost − pyrite! Not so fast. WRs Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel and DE Nick Bosa were among the inactives Sunday and don't even truly illustrate the injury issues here. The Niners were also playing at 1 p.m. on the East Coast on the heels of a Monday night appearance. RB Christian McCaffrey was well shy of 100%, and QB Brock Purdy was well shy of his typical 100.0+ passer rating, picked off twice by the plucky Falcons. If ever there was a time to give a team a mulligan, especially as it heads into a badly needed bye week, this is it.
The 49ers signed Evans in free agency to be their primary X receiver and produce against man coverage. Through the first six weeks, that's exactly what he did. In a Week 5 win over Seattle, quarterback Brock Purdy had a QBR of 90 when Evans was on the field versus 56 when he wasn't. Achilles tendinitis kept Evans out of San Francisco's only loss, driving home his value to the team.
They lost for the first time this season at Atlanta, and it was four turnovers that did them in Sunday. They head to their bye in need of key players getting healthy when they return.
I admittedly feel a little bad about dropping the 49ers this far against a Falcons team that has been impressive at times over the past few weeks, especially since I still suspect this is the best team in football — you know, in those rare moments when they're mostly healthy. But there’s no avoiding the reality that they are incredibly banged up, and they added RB Christian McCaffrey to their injury list with a calf injury. Mostly, though, I’m concerned about this: They’ve turned the ball over eight times in the past three games, including four on Sunday. They’re too good to be that careless with the ball.
Not much of a punishment for the 49ers here, who got a controversial touchdown called back, lost Christian McCaffrey for a portion of this game and were still very much alive in the waning moments. If this is what a 49ers breakdown looks like in 2026, I think Kyle Shanahan will take it.
The bye is coming at a good time for the 49ers. One of the reasons Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel Sr., Nick Bosa and others might have been inactive Sunday was because the bye would give them an extra week of rest before their return. Niners tight end George Kittle was unwilling to use the injuries as an excuse for the loss to the Falcons.
As dominant as the San Francisco 49ers have looked at times this season, their injury list is extensive.
With Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel out Sunday in Atlanta, the Niners' top-two receivers were Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing. The Niners played part of Sunday's tilt with Atlanta without the services of star running back Christian McCaffrey.
Losing one game is hardly the end of the world—the team still retains a comfortable lead in the NFC West and has head-to-head wins over every team in the division—but the bye week comes at an ideal time for the Niners.
Losing McCaffrey for a prolonged period of time might have been the straw that broke their backs. Instead, San Francisco has two weeks to lick its wounds and get healthy ahead of two winnable games coming out of the bye.
The Niners played without their top five wide receivers on Sunday. Christian McCaffrey missed time. And they still put up 105 more yards of offense than the Falcons. In short, this was a bad game (Brock Purdy threw two interceptions) from a good team that eventually should be fine. Especially with a week off to get healthier.
