Flag football coach arrested for allegedly choking teenage girl after chaotic brawl broke out involving his daughter

A 37-year-old Florida man has been arrested for allegedly strangling a teenager following a flag football game in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Brandon Mayer, 37, was serving as a coach on October 20 when he allegedly put a player into a 15-second chokehold during postgame handshakes. He has been charged with felony battery by strangulation.

What's more, his 16-year-old daughter was also arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly attacking the same player in addition to the girl's father.

The elder Mayer denied putting anyone in a chokehold when speaking to officers, according to the arrest report obtained by South Florida's CBS affiliate, CBS12.com. The Daily Mail has sought an arrest report from the department.

Mayer and his daughter, who has not been identified by police due to her age, were both arrested by Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies on Wednesday.

Sophia Lopez, 15, has identified herself as the alleged victim in this incident. She and her father, Ryan, both spoke with CBS12.com.

'She started making fun of me for losing the game,' Sophia said of the 16-year-old who was arrested for misdemeanor battery. 'The one thing I said to her that set her off was, 'You just fell on your face, and it's a rec game.'

The unidentified 16-year-old is accused of grabbing Sophia by her hair and pulling her to the ground. It was then that Mayer intervened, allegedly putting Sophia into a chokehold, according to witness statements. Sophia was later taken by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

'It felt everything was so tight,' Sophia said. 'It felt like I was just, I was never gonna get out until I just saw black.

'It felt like somebody was stabbing me in my stomach, and I check and there's just bruises everywhere,' Sophia said of the experience. 'My body is so tense and so hurting because I mean, my body's regaining oxygen. It was very painful.'

Sophia's father Ryan Lopez got involved to try and pry his daughter free, according to a police report obtained by CBS12.com. Ryan went on to explain that Sophia suffers from non-epileptic seizures, and appeared to be losing consciousness while being held by Mayer.

'It was a complete choke,' Ryan Lopez said. 'So he's pulling her forward and he's trying to pull her back, not by her waist, which would be the common-sense thing to do.

'It was terrifying,' he added. 'It was terrifying for me. It was terrifying for the parents that were there.'

The fight was not over, according to Ryan.

'All I did was just pull [Mayer] down, and then while I'm trying to get up, [Mayer's daughter] pulls my chain and then kicks me in the face with her cleat,' Ryan said.

Witnesses photographed Mayer's license plate and provided the information to Sheriff's deputies.

The Lopez family told CBS12.com that Mayer and his daughter have been kicked out of the league.

Mayer was released from jail Thursday on a $7,500 bond.

While flag football is in its infancy across much of the country, Florida students, and in particular, girls, have been playing the sport in organized leagues for decades. Currently the state has more than 10,000 girls competing at the high school level, according to state records.

The sport is set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
