Boundary Park will host a battle of the Owls on Sunday (kick-off 5.15pm).
And the tie has brought back memories of previous meetings for Ritchie and others of that era, not least a day of drama in the final game of the 1990/91 season.
The Latics legend was not involved in the game itself due to injury, but celebrated with his team-mates as Neil Redfearn's penalty clinched a 3-2 win, the old Second Division title and promotion to the top flight.
The teams have locked horns many times since, but that game is one in particular that sticks out for Ritchie.
"We beat them on the final day of the season to win promotion," the former striker recalled.
"Boundary Park was packed that day. We always had big crowds - I played at a time when we had full crowds virtually every time we played - but there seemed to be even more in for that game.
"Hopefully the ground will be full again this weekend because it's a great tie and will bring back a lot of memories for fans of a certain age.
"It will be one of those games where we are the underdog, but they won't be relishing coming to Oldham."
Reflecting on his own previous meetings with Sheffield Wednesday, Ritchie added: "I played against them a few times in my career, for Leeds and for Oldham.
"For Leeds I scored a bit of a controversial goal against them at Elland Road. They said it was the 'Hand of God'.
"The ball came in, skimmed against my head but hit my hand as well.
"Martin Hodge was chasing me round the pitch telling me to own up to the referee, but of course I didn't."
