Elgin City manager Stefan Laird wants to avenge a sore defeat in Dumbarton with a measure of League 2 revenge at Borough Briggs this weekend

It’s a revenge mission for a sore defeat brought about by one of this season’s most incredible goals.

Elgin City host Dumbarton on Saturday, no doubt recalling their 2-1 loss to the Sons in September.

The Black and Whites dominated the contest for long spells but fell behind, then conceded a second struck from deep inside Dumbarton’s own half.

Ali Omar’s stunning effort was the talk of Scottish football at the time, and Elgin manager Stefan Laird is keen for his men to get one back on their early season conquerors.

He said on the club’s social media after Tuesday’s 5-0 defeat at Airdrie in the KDM Evolution Trophy that his team’s league form is on the rise and he was eager to see that continue.

“We've had a fantastic time in the last six or seven weeks,” he said. “We've won six of our last eight games.

“We've been fantastic, in the month of October, we've scored the most goals in the league, we've got the most points, we've conceded the least goals.

“We're playing pretty well, so I'm not too concerned by what has happened (in the KDM Evolution Trophy).”

This weekend’s clash is Elgin’s only Borough Briggs venture in a six-game stint, before they meet Partick Thistle in the Scottish Cup at the end of November.

“I’m looking forward to getting back home. We don't seem to be there too often at the minute, but our travels have been good to us.

“So, we owe Dumbarton one, we obviously suffered defeat down there and I keep talking about the mini-series that we're involved in.

“This is a game in a mini-series that we need to get even, we need to get that to 1-1, so the next time we go back down to the Rock, we've got an opportunity to try and step in front of them.”

Dumbarton’s win over Elgin coincided with the appointment of Danny Lennon as their new director of football, and he expects the Sons to push their way up the League 2 ranks.

“It was a wee bit of a rejuvenation for them, with Danny coming in, and I think they're in a false position,” he said.

“They've got quality all over the pitch, they've got one of the strongest squads in the league, that's for certain.

“Most of their team now has played at a higher level. I know that their travels haven't been great recently, so that will come to an end at some point, and we need to be at our best to make sure that it doesn't happen on Saturday, with our fans behind us.

“We're on a cracking run, we're playing really well, and we'll be banging at it again on Saturday to go and get three points in front of our home supporters.”
