Spain urged to quit 2030 World Cup if Morocco hosts final

The centenary finals are set to be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, with the opening three matches due to be staged in South America as a nod to Uruguay’s hosting of the inaugural tournament in 1930.

FIFA has not confirmed which of the three main co-hosts will be awarded the final, only saying that a decision will be taken in due course.

However, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, the leader of the opposition People’s Party, insists Spain should back out of hosting the tournament if it is not chosen to stage the final.

“If Morocco ends up hosting the final, Spain should leave the organisation (of the tournament),” he told El Chiringuito TV.

He added on X in a post quoting the El Chiringuito interview: “Restoring our country’s pride also means not letting anyone walk all over us.

“The World Cup final belongs to Spain. The world’s top footballing nation is not humiliated. I will defend my country’s interests. In this too.”

The revamped Bernabeu Stadium or Camp Nou would be worthy contenders to host, but Morocco are continuing to push for the Grande Stade Hassan II in Casablanca, with a projected capacity of 115,000, to stage the showpiece game.

Morocco is currently staging the Under-17 boy’s World Cup, held an emergency meeting of the FIFA management board in August when FIFA president Gianni Infantino looked under threat and will also be the venue for next year’s FIFA Congress, where Infantino is hoping to secure a fourth term as president.
