Mario Andretti has praised Lewis Hamilton's performances at Ferrari in 2026, highlighting the seven-time world champion's recovery following a difficult first season with the Italian team. The former Formula 1 champion also expressed his hopes of seeing the Scuderia challenge for the world title in 2027.
Ferrari's progress this season has caught Andretti's attention, with the American recognising the improvements made by the Maranello-based outfit compared to 2025. He hopes the team can continue moving forward next year and establish itself as a contender for the Drivers' Championship.
Speaking about Ferrari's prospects for 2026, Andretti said: "I'm hoping for an even stronger Ferrar]. This year, they've taken a huge step forward compared to last season, and I hope they'll be even more competitive next season so they can challenge for the world championship."
Andretti also discussed Ferrari's driver pairing, singling out Hamilton for the way he has responded to the difficulties of his previous campaign. The 1978 world champion was equally complimentary of Charles Leclerc, who continues to represent the Italian team alongside the Briton.
"Lewis Hamilton has bounced back like a true champion after a very difficult season, and Charles Leclerc continues to prove himself an excellent driver."
The American then turned his attention to the possibility of a championship battle involving both Ferrari drivers in 2027. Andretti also named Kimi Antonelli as another driver he would like to see competing for the title, highlighting the prospect of a fight involving the Italian youngster.
"Let's hope we can see them battling for the title in 2027, perhaps even against Antonelli. It would be incredible for all the fans, Italian and otherwise."

While Andretti praised Hamilton for his recovery during the 2026 season, Ralf Schumacher offered a very different assessment of the seven-time world champion's situation at Ferrari. The former Formula 1 driver criticised the Briton's attitude within the Italian team, suggesting that Hamilton is struggling to integrate himself into the organisation and is attempting to exert too much influence over those around him.
Speaking on Sky Germany's Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Schumacher raised concerns about the relationship between Hamilton and Ferrari, suggesting that internal tensions could be affecting the atmosphere at Maranello. The German argued that Hamilton needs to become more involved with the team rather than trying to establish himself as its leading figure. He also questioned whether the British driver is communicating effectively with the people responsible for implementing the changes he wants to see.
Schumacher's criticism also extended to Hamilton's relationship with Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur. The former Williams driver suggested that the two may not be working together as harmoniously as expected, although he presented his concerns as personal impressions rather than confirmed information.
