Maresca on O'Reilly fitness, Donnarumma errors and Forest

Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground (kick-off 17:30 GMT).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

  • Nico O'Reilly "isn't 100% at the minute" so it doesn't surprise him the left-back missed out on a spot in the England squad for their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Spain. He explained: "We need to keep him fit now because we know how good he is for us. There's no doubt he will be back with the international team in the future, but a little break is what he needs so he is 100% when we return."

  • The reason for Phil Foden's exclusion is a little bit more unclear, though, with the attacking midfielder "doing well" for Manchester City. It is now Maresca's "duty" to "slowly" build him back to his best.

  • Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has already made three errors leading to goals, "recognises that he has made some mistakes, but at the same time recognises that he has made some great saves" this season. Maresca added: "It is quite easy with him because he recognises any mistake immediately. I've spoken to him about it, but I didn't feel the need to be so deep with him because he already knows and recognises that he has made some mistakes."

  • On it being "too difficult to say" how much of his philosophy the players have adopted since he took charge in June: "I can see my playing style just by working every day with them, but we can still improve many things. We know exactly what we are doing well and what we need to improve. It is just a matter of time."

  • Nottingham Forest being one point adrift from the bottom of the Premier League table is "surprising, especially after watching their games". In Maresca's opinion, Oliver Glasner's side "deserve more points" when you factor in "the number of chances they create" every game.

  • He hopes Elliot Anderson will "receive a good reception" from the Forest fans "because what he did there was important and the money he left them was also important". Marseca said the England international, who is one of the most expensive players in British history, is a "dream player for any manager" because "he wants to learn, see videos, understand things and improve every day".

  • On whether his role in midfield could be similar to Kevin de Bruyne's: "It is a matter of balance. We have Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic in our midfield, so it is about adjusting what we do game by game, according to our gameplan. He is playing more as a holding midfielder at the moment, but there's no doubt he could play a little bit more forward in the future."
