Forget Hogh: Nobody is Talking About Celtic Star Who Martin O'Neill Should Drop Next

Oct 27, 2026, 7:16 AM GMT

After deciding late that he wanted a career in sports journalism, Daniel worked his way up the ladder in an unconventional manner.

Having opted against university, Daniel worked with Sky Sports as a freelance contributor and translator during transfer windows while also volunteering on several other blog pages and outlets to get a portfolio of content together.

Daniel then worked with Barnet FC as part of their social media team before starting his own website, which focused on football and MMA content.

That eventually led to work with 90min and Reach PLC with The Mirror, Daily Record, Daily Express, and Manchester Evening News.

Following that, Daniel spent two-and-a-half years with Breaking Media covering Everton, Rangers, Leeds, West Ham and other clubs before joining GiveMeSport as a Premier League editor.

As well as football, Daniel is a huge MMA fan and has appeared on YouTube and podcast content too.

Celtic made it three consecutive wins in the Scottish Premiership this past weekend with a 2-1 win over Hibernian in a hard-fought clash.

The table-toppers maintained their four-point lead ahead of fierce rivals Rangers thanks to an own goal from Jason Kerr and a strike from Camilo Duran, as they battled back from 1-0 down in the first half.

The result has helped to ease some pressure on manager Martin O'Neill, who has seen his job come under fire after a string of poor performances this season, including three defeats in three Europa League games against Ferencvaros, Benfica, and Celta Vigo.

The club's summer signings have largely struggled, too. Duran has been a top signing, and someone that O'Neill can take plenty of credit for bringing into the club. But the likes of Kasper Hogh, Oliver Sorensen, Landon Emenalo, and Sam Johnstone haven't hit the ground running, and poor performances have begun to be called out by the fans.

Hogh is the club's record-signing after his arrival from Bodo/Glimt in the summer, but he has so far managed just three goals in 14 appearances for the reigning champions, which simply isn't good enough.

Against Hibernian, he was once again poor, missing some glaring chances and having only a handful of touches in the second half before being substituted. But while patience is beginning to wear thin with the Denmark international, another star seems to be getting away with it.

Who got more assists?

Round 1 of 9

One of the club's key players last season was midfield star Benjamin Nygren, who was the top scorer with 21 goals and 9 assists in 58 appearances in all competitions.

The Sweden international started this season well too, and has so far notched eight goals and six assists in 17 appearances. But his performances in recent games have been incredibly disappointing, and him getting a start against Hibs was relatively surprising.

However, O'Neill chose to include him once again, and was thanked by a hapless showing. The 25-year-old was at fault in the build-up to Hibs' goal in the opening minutes, and he provided little on or off the ball throughout the game. He somehow completed the full 90 minutes, and earned a measly 4/10 rating.

It's now clear that unless there is a certain type of game situation, or certain type of midfielder partnering him in the middle, then Nygren's performances will blow hot and cold. As a result, the manager must start looking at alternative options, and that means dropping his star man.

Nygren Can't Keep Getting Away With It

Benjamin Nygren celebrates scoring for Celtic

Right now, Nygren is very much getting away with the fact he offers little in midfield because he pops up with goals and assists. That's a great trait to have, but when you stop offering that, you begin to offer nothing, and Celtic need all 11 players on the pitch to be contributing or they suffer.

Right now there are a number of players in the squad underperforming, and none more so than Kasper Hogh. But that is allowing for players like Nygren to go under the radar with their poor showings.

O'Neill must show that he isn't blind to the poor performances and take action. Celtic are better when everyone is pulling their weight, and if Nygren isn't going to do it, then the manager must make a statement and show that it won't be tolerated.

The team will welcome Dundee Utd to Celtic Park on Wednesday night, and it would be the perfect opportunity to make that statement.
